So since Nismo's weather prediction had me thinking about weather, I thought why not start a new weather thread related to anything that is weather related.

Frankly, I have to say that Nismo is pretty much dead on with her prediction about the severe weather going on for tomorrow (Thursday).

Statement from the weather.com that I copied over here:

... SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND THURSDAY NIGHT...

AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL CROSS THE TENNESSEE VALLEY REGION THIS AFTERNOON. UNSEASONABLY MILD TEMPERATURES AND STRONG WINDS WILL SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS MUCH OF THE AREA. THE MAIN THREAT FROM THE STORMS WILL BE DAMAGING STRAIGHT LINE WIND GUSTS.

A GREATER POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE STORMS WILL ARRIVE THURSDAY NIGHT AHEAD OF A STRONG COLD FRONT. AS LOW PRESSURE CROSSES THE OHIO VALLEY... A STRONG SOUTH WIND WILL DEVELOP THURSDAY AFTERNOON... AND TEMPERATURES WILL RISE INTO THE 70S IN THE TENNESSEE VALLEY. THE WARM MOIST AIR AND GUSTY SOUTH WINDS WILL GENERATE STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AFTER SUNSET THURSDAY EVENING... MOVING EAST ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH MIDNIGHT. DAMAGING STRAIGHT LINE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BE THE MAIN THREAT... WITH A POTENTIAL FOR SOME TORNADOES AS WELL.

SINCE THE MAIN THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE AFTER DARK THURSDAY NIGHT... RESIDENTS OF EAST TENNESSEE AND SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA ARE URGED TO MAINTAIN A HIGH LEVEL OF AWARENESS.

David - I'd say you're in for a very soggy muddy run (like the one me and Sean went on) this weekend at CC if you are still planning on going.

The Storm Prediction Center doesn't issue HIGH risk normally...it's rare that we see MODERATE, much less HIGH. They issued a HIGH risk on 27 April 2011. They also issued a 45% tornado probability that day, and those values are 30% today.

For the folks in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Alabama, Mississippi: today is not a "play" day for the NWS.

Nismo-- you going to school for Meteorology?

I am going to Northern Illinois University for my Meteorology, I actually will have my Bachelors in May. I will be getting my Masters as well.

Anyways: this setup is extremely ripe for a severe weather outbreak. It's actually quite scary. I was going to go chase tornadoes today, but I didn't care for the landscape. This could be a day similar to last year's Alabama, but perhaps not the same magnitude (number of supercells producing tornadoes). I have several friends down there, and I am honestly nervous for them.

No, I'm just weather-nerdy. Right now, NWS is reporting at least 2 tornadoes the ground in my area..I'm monitoring the OHX and HUN chat rooms currently, and there are two confirmed tornadoes in Northern Alabama (near Athens) about to cross into TN, and one lowering about 50mi east of me.

I'm in the process of packing up to go man the rescue truck at the fire department.

Fun-or not so fun-fact: SPC hasn't issued a HIGH risk in our area since 2006. We weren't in the HIGH risk in April last year- somehow, we stayed MODERATE.

I don't know how you people can live in Tornado prone areas. Is it something you get used to? I saw a tornado once when I lived in Florida and it amazed and scared the crap out of me at the same time.

Yup, we just had a report of a possible touchdown near Knoxville, or at least that is what I'm reading online. My office had to hunker down in the basement for a while today.

I expect the worst to strike tonight.

If you didn't get my message earlier, thanks for the heads up. I'll probably stay here for the night.

Its sunny and about 75 here right now- the calm before the storm. Bama just cancelled all classes/buildings after 1400 (2PM). Even if I wanted to leave, I don't believe they'll let me because of the new severe weather protocol (I still live on campus). It probably won't be as bad down here as it will be up in Nashville-Bowling Green.

Best of luck to you all. Stay smart; stay safe. :D

Update: just south of Knoxville got a few twisters. Cleveland, Etowah, Englewood, Tellico, Madisonville got some as well. A lot of my friends out there have damage at their families home. So far my area has been lucky.

You don't want any part of these storms. Several towns in Indiana are no more: they were wiped clean. Several towns got hit by one tornado, and immediately hit by another less than 10min later. There are two "supercells" that have tracked from near Evansville, IN to southeast of Cincinatti, producing tornadoes the whole time.

Sorry for double posting but I thought Id share what happened here in Bowling Green KY
It was 75'F or so while the first super cell went south of us (hit nashville...hoping the nashvegas Xers are fine!) watched it pass while sitting on the hood of my xterra. Then out of know where I'm driving around the neighborhood and another supercell rolls up. I go home to watch it roll in.

As I'm watching these weird clouds they are issuing tornado warnings like crazy and all the tornado sirens are going off constantly. Out of the blue it starts pouring and I mean raining sideways with 60-80 mph winds!! Its gone within 10 minutes...the yard was flooded and trees where down on a few roads. The power was out for about 3 hours. Our YMCA buildings room was ripped off, thats the only damage I have seen besides trees down.
I know north of louisville a town called marysvile indiana I think was wiped out and nashville was getting baseball sized hail, it always seems to go around bowling green which I see as bitter sweet. I don't want to have my home destroyed but I was really hoping to see a twister. Also earlier today the discovery channel storm chasers where in town.
I honestly hope everyone is safe!

Earlier today they had bowling green and south-central KY rated for the highest risk of tornados out of the hole line of storms. The threat was a 9 out of 8 lol then it moved to a 10.
Like I said it was in the 70s and now they are calling for 2" of snow sunday...

Despite being told otherwise by very smart people, I drove through it from Tuscaloosa to Nashville. Rained twice the entire way, but I caught the brunt of the Columbia, TN storm that just rolled through not long ago.

Also passed a Dodge Intrepid with a 8ft pole taking pictures. If you see a storm chaser stopped on the side of the road, do you stop and turn around or keep going? :D

Wow...We've got a tornado warning out right now. There's some pretty weird clouds forming outside and it's spittin' hail...The lightning is just sick, though!!!

We got a good lightning show here in west Knoxville too. No damage that I can see. I'm worried about Jefferson city and morristown tho.

Sent from my brain of knowledge and power.

Yea...I've got family over in Morristown area...Hope it doesn't hit there too hard. I absolutely love this lightning we're having, though.
