Turkey hunting

Since the hunting board is incredibly slow, I thought I'd post something.

I'm going to try turkey hunting for the first time this season (starts April 1). Just got my tags yesterday and already have a gun, some shells, and what should be a couple decent places to hunt.

I know I need good head to toe camo because of there eyesight. I have a box call, will be getting a slate call, and I might try a diaphragm. May also pick up a few decoys.

Just wanted to see if any of you guys had tips for a first timer. Mainly on how to locate them. I've been told to get an owl or crow locator call and to call at dusk. If any are nearby I may get a call back and be able to find the roosting spot.

You definitely need to be camo'd up, and very quiet. Also, very little movement. I'm sure you already knew that but just making sure. Turkeys are very cautious, in Nebraska anyways. I usually spot and stalk turkeys using a bow-- but if I get fed up with not getting in range I will use a ground blind and call. I use an in mouth reed for a call, but others work fine. If I sit somewhere i prefer a ground blind, because it does a pretty good job of containing scents, sounds, movement, etc. If you do use a ground blind, don't have all the windows down-- they can see all the way through and detect movements-- just open up windows on one or two sides and sit back out of the window. You should have a blast. And if I can recommend something for cooking them, I like to just breast them out, cut the breasts into strips, and make "turkey fingers" in the frying pan with a little batter. Let us know how it goes! Next time I go I'll try getting some video.

nice! I have no tips, but really want to go, but sadly most of the land around here that is for turkey hunting is private land and you need a letter from the land owner before you can even get a tag, at least thats how i read the reqs. best of luck to you

Dang, around here people love it when hunters want to shoot turkeys. They don't even care if you have a tag. They're all over though and they do work on feed for cattle.
