To sell or not to sell

So I am considering selling my 03 to get a gen 2. But… I am not certain it will be worth it.

Mine was owned by the original owner from day one up until 183,000 miles. It was over maintenanced. Everything it ever needed or scheduled maintenance was done by the dealer…. I have every single receipt for every single part, service/ maintenance done.

I did the timing belt, Waterpump, etc…. As well as shocks and other items. We put almost 5000 miles on it and it’s been flawless. I love it but have the itch for a gen 2. But curious to hear what you guys think.

Do I put the money into this and get an actual lift, or sell and build a gen 2. Will I regret the decision? (I did sort of a PML, AAL and cranked t-bars)

This thing is also super clean. It was from and lived in Washington state until 2015 and then California, before coming to PA in 2020

Is there a huge benefit over the newer gen2?

As someone who has made this deal in the past. I sold my 02 with a 3" lift and 33s to buy an 07 which got a full Titan swap. I then sold that and bought an 04.

On paper, the 2nd Gen is better in a lot of ways. It's more powerful, better aftermarket support (which is dwindling now), has more room, and is generally nicer vehicle to drive.

However.

The reason I went back to a 1st Gen is because I just didn't love the 2nd Gen. It was great. I wheeled the ufck out of it. Can attest to its capabilities. But I didn't get that "look at it and swoon" feeling.

The 2nd Gen loses some of the charm that the 1st Gen has. That plucky mountain goat feeling. The "everything you need and nothing you don't" feel.

I'll never tell anyone that they shouldn't. But I'm a 1st Gen person.

basically, if you want to be in the og club with prime and i, you'll stick with the 1st gen, if you wanna sit on the short bus, get a 2nd gen

As a 2nd gen owner, some of it comes down to what you want out of a vehicle. I daily mine, so having that extra bit of comfort and niceity is more important than the ruggedness of the 1st gen. Mine is more than capable of the off road usage I need out of it, but on the overall scale, prefers pavement.

If all you are looking for is an fun-to-drive offroad beast, then the question becomes, how much more upgrades can you afford for the 1st you already own, vs how much will it set you back if you were to sell and buy a 2nd. Like, if you can sell yours for $1k and buy a newer one for $15k, what would $14k in parts buy you for lift kit, tires, bumpers, etc on the vehicle you already own, and know the history of. And what sort of issues might you have on a vehicle you don't necessarily know the history of (early 2nds had SMOD on the autos, timing chain guide issues, etc).

Says the guy who was not so long ago saying he was getting rid of his 1st gen.

The 2nd gen is a beastly offroad vehicle. Particularly with the correct Mods.

I guess my thoughts are just about used 4wd in general. If you have a flawless one do you want to risk getting one with problems? If you are going to do a lot of long road trips on pavement with it then seems like Gen 2 is clearly superior in comfort and power. I have a 2002 and use it for short commutes but can’t really take it anywhere too far on the island. Mines got a 4.9 rear axle but I would replace the 2X transfer case with a 4x if I was on the mainland. Otherwise it gets me where I want to go to here. It also needs belly armor if you are going to crawl. Vulnerable parts of the tranny and xfer case hang below the frame. But again our trails generally not that bad
