Just use a belt sander, that's what the jackass I worked 3rd shift with used to do...usually right before or after bitching about how he can't keep an edge on his knives.
I'd rather use it dull than ruin my blade.

I use a a bench mounted belt sander on my bigger knives and axes when they are in bad shape. I just take my time and don't let it build up heat.
