I would use Amazons lower Quality Clone copy of The Real one as a Paper weight. BUY Quality bolts.. Failure could cost way more.

Sure do not look the same..
Yeah if I wasn’t returning them I’d cut one open and see what’s inside. They weigh on average 3g more each than the real one. It was a panic buy Saturday when I couldn’t find them locally and in case Grainger didn’t have them yesterday. Then Sunday I remembered McMaster Carr and it was too late to cancel the Amazon.

What is the Lowest Air pressure folks run on Durtracs?. For Off Road, Snow, Sand Etc?.

I tend to just air down till tires show slight bump. But never measured it.. makes me wonder how low I can deflate too, with out busting a Bead. NOT doing Crawling stuff.. Do have ON board air.
Tires. I be running. 265/ 70R 17. Street PSI.. 35 PSI- 40 PSI. roughly.

one of those.. Hmm. I should know this!. haha. But do carry winch, and Pulley's. too. :)

Looks like safe average 15 PSI would work.. gives me a good ball park to play with, and Actually measure.. too.. gauges are cheap enough to carry Vs just eye ball deflate.

Got this in the mail yesterday. Yes our Xterras mostly sit in the wintertime but it's not like it's up on blocks or something. How long have they been casing out our Xterra? The return address is about 15 miles away, 25 minute drive so it's not exactly in the neighborhood.

Anyone else ever get something like this in the mail? I never have before so it's just odd to me. Probably totally innocuous, but it weirded me out a bit.

I would send them mail back. Tell them you would consider selling for $37,236 (or whatever obscene amount) and if that is acceptable they can drop off a suitcase of unmarked non sequential bills. Small bills too. Nothing bigger than $20. As $50s and $100s have trackers in them. The title will be delivered by alpaca courier. Tell them it has had all the government trackers removed, but just to be safe don't drive it often. In order to start it you have to make a sound like a giraffe and caress the backside of the drivers mirror. Insist on communicating by mail as it's the only method that the lizard people can't digitally listen to. Also refuse to meet in person since you have extreme agoraphobia.

not in the mail, but under the windshield wiper. I looked up the phone number that was listed, and it was for a used car guy a half hour away.

That's amazing, I lol'ed. Gonna be a lot of work cutting out all of those letters from magazines for the note, but it'll be worth it!

I googled what a giraffe sounds like, because I thought they didn't really make any noise. Apparently at night they sometimes hum at around 92Hz.

The researchers noted:

exploring giraffe vocal communication turned out to be time consuming, tedious and very challenging

I googled the number and was expecting it would be something like that, tied to a used car dealer, but I didn't get any matches. If it's not something scammy, it could just legitimately be some random guy who wants to buy an Xterra.

I am on a Carfax email list from purchasing some parts at the Nissan dealer and I get these occasional emails with a trade in offer. The last one was $1860  Um no thank you.

Well…construction workers next to where I park broke my passenger rear quarter panel window. The company will pay to replace it. But, I was wondering if anyone knows of any “door” options? I’ve seen where people replace windows with doors that open to access for storage. Do we have any of those for the X?

I have sold 2 vehicles this way and bought one. The people left letters on my gate, and I left a note on the door.

Why aren’t more tires offered in 255/85r16?
I searched for some good options when I bought our first Xterra back in 2014. There wasn't much choice back then either.

The referenced article from Expeditions West doesn't seem to be available anymore except via the Wayback Machine:

Not sure about the original source, but here's a quote from that article that mentions why the 75 series became popular:

Metric Tire History: Metric Tire engineering became standardized in 1964 with the inception of the European Tire and Rim Technical Organization (ETRTO). This consortium pursued design and fitment standards that optimized tire performance and safety in the European market. One of the first results was the creation of a standardized tire range and labeling method. The range first included the sizes of 235, 265, 285, etc. with aspect ratios of 75% of the tire width. The engineers determined that the ratio of 75% created the best compromise between handling safety on the road and low surface traction performance. As a result, metric tires for tight trucks are typically found in that aspect ratio (example= 265/75 R16).

If it existed... I'd love a 265/80R16 all terrain in a C or D load range. Similar diameter as the E range 285/75R16's that many of us choose because that's what's available, but lighter and a better match to our GVW.

I have sold 2 vehicles this way and bought one. The people left letters on my gate, and I left a note on the door.

For sure, leaving a note directly on or near the vehicle is pretty normal... it was getting it in the mail and a few other things that seemed off to me.

Although it appears to be hand written, here's some reasons why I am pretty sure this was part of some direct marketing thing on behalf of a used car dealer rather than just some private party individual who genuinely wants to buy an Xterra for himself:

My wife's friend received a nearly identical note in the mail recently. They have an older Toyota Highlander and a mini van of some sort, nothing too similar to an Xterra.

I was bored at work the other day and called the number in the letter, and there was no voicemail greeting. Tried again the next day and a guy answered. I told him thank you for the interest but I'm not planning on selling my blue Toyota. That didn't phase him and he didn't seem to care what the vehicle even was. My gut feeling was that he didn't write and send this letter and it was probably on behalf of a dealership or vehicle buyer of some sort.

There are companies that will create these kind of letters. With pen plotters and machine learning the "handwriting" has gotten pretty hard to distinguish from human. Again, this could legitimately be written by hand, but I found this stuff fascinating.

Interesting. I've gotten stuff like that in the mail that was clearly from dealers. But nothing that read like it was from a neighbor.

The USPS could solve their budget problem by just offering a paid service to have them throw it out before it gets to you
Here's how you get back at them.... or at least some of them

When you get a junk offer for a CC or some other "please reply within the next 10 days" kind of shiat.. Open it up... get the return envelope out, and refill it it with a bunch of other shiat like those coupons that come every so often. Then mail it back to them in their very own postage paid envelope. ( just make sure to never send them back their own shiat)

Its a win win win..... post man has a job to do, some one has to open that shiat when it gets there, and you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have returned a bunch of garbage to someone who sent you a bunch of garbage.

whats the perfect ratio on a rear shock comparing full compression to full extension and how much compression do you sacrifice for more extension ?

Got a 3/4” tear in the CV boot... it’s enough to throw grease. Should I just let it ride, change the boot, or change the whole CV? I have OME CVs, so I rather keep the CV than exchange it with one made of cheaper steel.

I put boots on one of mine recently. It's not a hard job, just a pain to clean everything.

I grabbed a used OE CV from a salvage yard for $25 and put it in, the put new boots on my OE for a spare shaft.

The outer boots aren't much fun to replace, but the inner ones are easy. I just rebuilt a spare CV 2 days ago (broke one on a trip) .... Honestly as cheap as some of the aftermarket CV's are now, just replace it. Buy the time you buy a decent boot, the boot clamps, the grease, brake cleaner, and enough paper towels to fill a garbage can, its worth just replacing.... then buy two so you have a spare..... assuming you wheel the thing.

That reminds me I have a spare sitting on my garage shelf with a torn boot. It came from @SledheadX and I haven’t even looked at it yet to see what condition it’s in.

For you guys that have added a lift shackle and already had a 2° (or whatever) shim, did you just leave the shim? Remove it? Change to a different angle?
