The Dumb Question Thread

I just noticed in the past week that my driver side rear sits .5” lower than the passenger side. With a full tank or empty tank - doesn’t matter. Nothing looks wrong underneath. Just one leaf spring settling more than the other?

For those who have had both gens how much of a step back is a first gen from a second? May have a first gen I could get a deal on.. I'm sure this fits in the thread LOL just thinking out loud

Indestructible drive line. Slower. Smaller. Not as big of an aftermarket for parts. SAS is the ultimate goal if you're going to wheel it. If you keep the IFS be prepared to fight with the steering.

The first gens have their own strengths over the second gens. Second gens have some strengths over the first gens.
Less power, less room, less electronic nanny systems, easier to SAS, about the same tech wise I think, better colors.
^ Definitely true, it's got less power, and is significantly slower.

The indestructible drive train is one of the big reasons why I bought an 03.

I daily a '13 Frontier Pro-4x, and have an 03' Xterra as a toy.

First gens are smaller (I wouldn't say less comfortable, just has a bit less room), slower (substantially so with bigger tires and extras bolted on), and gets marginally worse gas mileage. That being said, as Prime said, the drivetrain is pretty much indestructible. I've beat the crap out of mine in the desert, bounced it off rocks, and taken it on very rough, multi-day, trips covering hundreds of miles. It's never let me down, never left me stranded, and never broken. Aftermarket support is a bit sparse, but everything is there. Skids, bumpers, lifts, racks.

The second gens feel like they have way more room, has some nicer options (heated leather seats are NICE....especially in the winter). It gets marginally better gas mileage (I average about 16-17 average), and has better aftermarket support.

First gens are easier to SAS, second gens can be titan swapped.

I love both, and wheel both.

Ok. For those of you with second gens, this is for you. Got a 6 button auxbeam switch panel that I need to install into my truck this weekend. The power wire for the switch panel that sits in the cab.....what do you guys recommend I tap into that's only powered when the vehicle is on? There's lots of ways I could do this. I could use an inline switch, and flip it on. I could tap into the power. I think I have a single 5-pin switch laying around that I'm not currently using. I might just do that, and turn it on when I need power. I've got to get it in this weekend, as I'm going to use it to toggle the charge for my DC charger in the trailer.

Do you need any amperage? Or does that thing just need 12v and it has relays and stuff?

The cigarette lighter inside the center console arm rest is keyed. Easy wire access to the dash.
That's not a bad idea. Now that you mention it, so are both of the outlets next to the oem switches. Maybe I'll just tap into one of those.

This is what I'm installing, fyi:

Check that. Because mine are always hot.
Mine are only hot when the vehicle is on.

Another question. Is there any place under the hood that I could tap into instead of under the dash? It looks like the power for the switch panel actually comes from the relay box, so I would have to run a wire through the firewall to power the switches, then run the control wire back through the firewall. I mean, if I have to, so be it, but I'd prefer to have everything coming from the engine bay, as it's much easier to deal with.

Yeah, there's lots of keyed power in the IPDM box. Get a schematic and find one.

Havent tested the 15 yet, but the 06 has one always hot, one keyed. I was just assuming thats how it was always done.
Maybe that's the difference. I have one always hot and the other one was an aux port (because upgraded audio system) its now two always hot USB ports.

See, and my aux port is inside the center console. But I'm also a '13 Frontier, so maybe that's part of what's different?

I saw some people on Reddit saying one was hot and one was keyed. On my 15 S both fronts and center console are keyed, and the one in the trunk is the only one hot.

I guess that it’s two different ways shouldn’t be all that surprising, but seems there’s at least three different configs.

Need Bigger Tires
If I recall, another difference is that certain trim levels had differing numbers of plugs, I think older S only had singles on the dash, whereas the Off Road / Pro4x has 2. Which is another thing to keep in mind.

I'm mostly wondering what would qualify as an "invalid vehicle"...
I bet they’ve had an influx of returns or damage claims due to incorrect sizing so if you buy anything other than stock size you check a disclaimer box acknowledging they may not fit.

Ok, so my 15 has 1 plug on dash and 1 in console tied to key. Second on dash has no power ever, so previous owner probably blew the fuse... but Im guessing it is always powered, or all of them would likely have been out.
Sounds like a pretty good bet.

Front driveshaft ujoints need replacing. The ‘dumb’ question is are there any seals or other things that need to be replaced? In this first picture I also see weeping where it slides into the diff.

That's not weeping from the seal on the t-case. The case is dry and the yoke is wet. Not sure what it IS, but a leaking seal on the case would result in a wet case and oil being slung around underneath.

Probably just incidental moisture on it, maybe from the u-joint caps where their seals have failed but that's included in new u-joints.
