When are "limit straps" necessary? Certain brand of shocks that don't have integrated bump stops? Certain weight and type of wheeling?

When your suspension can articulate beyond the limits of the CVs we run. It's to prevent the CV from binding at full droop.

They also prevent the shock from topping out and slamming on the internal bump stops.

Is it normal for the drain plug to stick down so low on the M226? It’s torqued to spec and from an 08 (though maybe I should check the 08 FSM just to be sure). On my C200 it was completely recessed and protected. And was also longer.

Also if it’s the bearings in the front diff, is it easier/cheaper to replace them or to just take the gears from this R180 and throw them in my other one? I’ve been looking for write ups on regearing the front but it seems everybody just finds a whole new front diff.

With either of those choices you'd have to replace the bearings. They come in the master install kits.

We can stick bearings on no issue. Your other diff won't have the proper setup for your gears.

I have a mechanic stethoscope so tonight I’ll get it up in the air and see if I can listen for the exact spot it’s loudest.

Check for play. You're looking for up/down and in/out play with the pinion, carrier and shafts. You'll have to pop the cover for full diag which means dropping the diff.

No play anywhere. With the scope right under the CV on the diff and right under the pinion there was no difference in sound.

Honestly about to just put my stock stuff back in and learn the lesson of not messing with things that are working fine.

No no. Let's figure this our. It's part of modded vehicles. You want easy? Drop $3k or stay stock. LOL

I’m just annoyed at the timing. I have a rigs and coffee + trail ride I’m supposed to be hosting Saturday morning and I’m annoyed at how much $$ I’ve had to continually dump into this set over the course of weeks.
Why do you still have the stock stuff? Embrace the mods. Find and/or live with the noise.
Holding on to it until I know the new stuff isn’t going to blow up. Once all the noises are gone and I’ve done a couple trails I’ll sell the original stuff.
