Changed the transmission fluid yesterday and wrapped my intake tube in reflective insulation. Maybe that'll help my IATs. Stayed around 150° F all day yesterday in the 100° temps.

I have the ability to do that with the Xterra... only 2 deg though... do you think it's worth trying?
The 2nd Gen Xterra actually checks and learns fuel octane to a certain extent and has functioning knock sensors. If you can tune it, I would look for all the timing tables from the 2005-2012 Pathfinder with the 4.0L.

They required a minimum 89 octane fuel because they have more aggressive timing tables to produce the higher HP they were rated at. I don't know hat their tables look like though. You'll need to data log it under many different engine loads and speeds and watch for knock. It's not just a "bump it in and run" situation.

I've put 20-30 miles on the X in a day running the same couple miles of road, listening for knock and trying to stress it out.

I tried to read the X with my HP Tuners and it wouldn't recognize it. Apparently UpRev is the way to go for Nissan. Stuff.

Mine is a Bully Dog, you can tune it 3 ways, but timing advance along with wide open throttle are things that can be changed when you install the tune.

Ohhh. So they aren't going to put aggressive tunes in those. Check the paperwork and see if they require you to run higher octane fuel with any of the available tunes.

It definitely makes a power difference and depending on where they dial it in, it will improve low end torque and crawl control.

In my Xterra, I always ran at least mid grade offroad. Remember that midgrade is literally low-test and premium blended 50/50 in the fuel pump at the station. I would run down to 1/2 tank on the way to the trail, top off with premium and the run mid-grade till I was done (longer trips) for the added bump in timing. With the increased IAT's offroad, it helped prevent knock even with the mild timing tables they come with.

Then on the way home, switch back to regular for DD use.
