Steering Wheel Won't Lock

So I came out to go someplace and noticed that my steering wheel was turned to about the 2 o'clock position when I parked it last. I tried turning the key to start the car and it wouldn't turn. Eventually I had to turn the steering wheel a bit farther to the right and the key unlocked and I was able to start the car.
Now I notice that when parked with the wheels straight, shifter in P, key removed, I can turn the steering wheel to the left and the right. It doesn't lock into position of straight ahead.

I wonder if something broke? Clock Spring? Any ideas??

It's not supposed to lock on straight ahead. It's supposed to lock at around the 2-o'clock and 10-o'clock position. And if the lock is loaded, you can't turn the key.

Sounds to me like everything is working properly.

Yeah, honestly this is the first time I've noticed it. MY next step would be to get the GF's xterra and see if hers does the same thing. At least now I have an idea that there is nothing wrong, but I will check it with her car just for double peace of mind.

And thanks for a quick answer. (The service manual has NOTHING about this. :D
