That was good info.. Seeing those rings, with Syn line. Can see that the Friction would be a Loss in the pull. not to mention wear on the Line.

My winch uses Wire rope.. so those rings would be ruined. Vs the pulleys.

And that fellow Talks funny? he a southern boy? ;-)

When it comes down to pulling your butt (or someone else's) out of situation, do you really care which is more efficient? Do you really say "Gee I'm not sure if I should use my snatch block or Bubba's snatch ring." No, you use what you have and it works.

Haha yeah I think he's from the really deep south!

The line follows the ring, so most of the wear would be on the soft shackle. And yes these are only for synthetic line.

I've never heard of a snatch ring before now. That seems very strange. The physics behind a snatch block are pretty sound. A snatch ring feels like re-inventing the wheel. Literally.

They've been around for a while in marine and arborist applications, only really a few years in this market. I think the first time I saw something like this was maybe 2018?

The physics aren't really much different, it still acts like a pulley. It does remove a lot of weight and metal from the system. And in the unlikely event that a solid ring like that should fail, it's still a closed system. If a snatch block fails (again unlikely) there's more mass to fly around.

Nothing wrong with coming up with new ways to do something, nothing wrong with sticking to what is proven either.

It could be just another way to separate people from their money with a shiny new thing. But I'm open to learning something new.

I like your quote and I try to think like that too. But there's other comparisons out there, in fact the first one that comes up when you search for snatch rings, that show them being so inefficient that you might not even want to consider them.

Here's the one I'm talking about:

I always questioned this but hadn't seen anything refuting it until now.

So which one is more accurate? IMO the one I posted in the original post seems to be better thought out and a more scientific, objective comparison.

I don't have any real winching experience. I only own one (Warn M8000 with synthetic line) because the previous owner of one of our Xterras installed it. But I figure it's worth it to learn more about rigging and winching if I ever do need to use it. I have taken an informal vehicle recovery class and that's about it as far as training.

Right now I have an ARB 9000 snatch block (like the one shown in both videos) but I have considered getting or making a soft shackle and adding one of these rings, just to have a few more options and not much weight or space penalty.

I have a snatch ring - it works fantastic. Highly recommend if you run synthetic. And you don't need those silly rubber "fingers" on the factor55 ring.

Thanks for the feedback, good to know.

Do you have any suggestions on soft shackles to use with the ring?

I have both the regular bubba rope gatorjaw and the gatorjaw pro soft shackles. I don't think they make the regular/original ones anymore, which is fine because i like the pro better anyway. Those work fine. To me, it makes more sense to use one with less sheathing because you want the ring to spin on the synthetic rope without much friction. I don't think that would happen with the sheath some have. My soft shackles have gotten a lot of work over the years and are holding up great.

They make more colors, but this is the one i'm talking about

edit:
this is the ring I bought (the 10 ton)
