I know this information exists elsewhere but I've been meaning to put it together here. If this is not the right subforum, please feel free to move it to a more appropriate one.

One of the big reasons we bought an Xterra was for a camping vehicle, and being able to sleep inside it is great. Here's how I set it up, and some information on the dimensions.

Rear seat bottoms removed, front seats slid and tilted forward, and two 8GL Action Packers in the rear seat footwells works best and gives the most sleeping room in my experience.

When set up like this, you have 80" of length from the rear hatch to the seat backs. Adding a sleeping pad or mattress increases this slightly due to the angle of the seat. I am 6'4" and this offers me just enough room to stretch out comfortably.

If you have the fold flat passenger front seat, that can be handy for setting things on, but you lose about 4" of depth as compared to just tilting the seat forward. From rear hatch to folded flat front passenger seat is around 76".

Using a 25" x 78" sleeping pad, or two of them side by side, works great.

The Action Packers don't fit in the footwells when your front seats are in driving position, so you need to find another place to put them. I usually have them in the back cargo area or secured where the seat bottoms normally go.

This setup works great for us and I've come to prefer it to sleeping in a tent, even though it's a bit cozy with two adults.

Solo trip setup in use. Thermarest 3" air mattress plus wool blanket, sleeping bag.

One of the good set ups.. action packers for the win!
Can also add 4" inflate pads.. for making it even with the fold down seat. For them ODD folks that are 6' plus.

Rear Windows for summer, you can add Skeeter netting with magnets. To have good air flow at night.

Yes window screens are nice if you need some ventilation.

I usually get in and out through the side door, but have also done the rear hatch interior release mod. I cannot find a writeup on here about that, anyone have a link to a how-to on this site?

That was surf & Snow's write up. I want to say 8" right & 3" up. 1" hole. for finger withj a Rubber Plug.. BUT that is a large guess.
Not sure if the other site still has it?. I just lay a rag of the floor plate. So it can not latch. .

found the Photo... I was close..
