Shock mount stud broke

Picked up 2 rear bilstein shocks from Rock auto for my 2011 Pro 4X. Driver’s side no worries other than rusty threads, when I slid over to the passenger side the upper stud mount (welded to the frame) looked different, I then realized it is snapped between the shock bracket & frame. Only thing I can think to repair this is grind it down on both sides of the frame & drill it out & replace with a bolt. Anyone have a better/easier idea?

I think that is about the only way to do it.

I watched a video on YouTube with a guy with a jeep basically had the same issue, he just drilled a new hole about an inch away & put a new bolt there… is that okay? Will it screw anything up.

Shock geometry is important, but moving it an inch shouldn't be a big deal. The problem you're going to have is that you need the shock to fasten at the right distance from the frame so it is horizontally aligned with the lower shock mount.

I will post up a pic as soon as I can, I just left it as is because I was in a friends garage, thought it would be a quick little job replacing the shocks and also 10 inches of snow today. Didn’t want my X down for that. Going to go with original idea & grind the factory stud & drill it out to replace with a new bolt/stud in the same location. What grade bolt would y’all suggest?

Grade 8 for suspension. It’s cheap enough that going grade 5 is just too cheap. Take it to a shop and have it rewelded though. It’s not that expensive to get that work done.

Well, here’s what the deal is after further review… removed both rear shocks, the stud I thought was broken isn’t. I’m assuming it broke at some point on the previous owner and they had it repaired due to the fact the nut on the top stud was a 14mm & has an offset (unless that’s factory I have no idea), anyway, everything went smoothly “pun intended”, & seems fine. I have a question about the front struts but I think I’ll start a different thread for that. Thanks for the advice.

I literally went though the same thing a week or two ago. The driver side upper shock mount is straight and the passenger side is offset and yeah, looks like it’s broke inside. Luckily it’s not.
