Anybody up for a double-decker? I would like to try Second Mountain, which is off of Long Run Rd.

Meeting spot would be 1pm at the beginning of Long Run Rd, adjacent to the church at 6179 Hopkins Gap Rd, Fulks Run, VA 22830 (but don’t park at the actual church).

If there’s extra time, we could maybe also do part of Dictum Ridge (same trailhead as Second Mountain).

I’ve been wanting to do another night run, and Peter’s Mill Run is on the way back for me if anyone is interested in that. Only suggesting that vs staying put because I don’t want to go at night to a place I’m not familiar with. But as always, I’m flexible and open to suggestions.

Just watched a YouTube video on Second Mountain (over a year old) where they said it was equivalent to Union Springs. Then a comment said they were there a week ago and it was a lot rougher and had more washed out spots. So this could be really fun, or maybe a little pucker-y.

Four Xterras coming that have confirmed so far!

Fun times yesterday. There were 5 of us that met up just after 1pm at the entrance to Long Run Rd. We took that up to the entrance of Second Mountain trail.

The southern end of Second Mountain trail has two gates - one private that residents of the private road put up, and one the Forest Service put up near it. If they’re closed, you have to turn around and come back up, but if open the private road is a right of way to access Rte 33. I would guess this time of year they’d be open, but somebody had destroyed both gates, so we were able to exit via 33.

The trail itself had so much water. I didn’t count the number of big puddle crossings, but if I had to guess maybe 50-ish? A couple were really deep. We had to stop once to cut up a fallen tree blocking the trail. Other than that, no issues- just a couple pucker moments. Scenery was great, and the rock formations at the bottom were really cool.

We aired back up, and after stopping for some gas station fried chicken and corn dogs, headed north to the Edinburg Gap entrance of Peter’s Mill Run. We started an hour before sunset, but with rain starting and storms rolling in, it was already getting dark. Being in the dark and rain together was a first, and made it seem new and different. I got soaked near the start out spotting, and we all got soaked airing back up at the end. I have both a rain jacket and towel in the truck, but stupidly in the hidden area under the panel in the trunk. I’ll change that for future trips.

After we were done, we all headed back, with a few of stopping at a 24 hour car wash to spray the mud off the underside. Some of the muddy water legitimately stunk, and I wanted to spray it out of the skid plates and suspension before going back home.

Here’s a video with some clips of the day and night. Pucker moments at 2:06 and 2:50 and then the night clips caught some lightning as well.
