Rivian gaining ground

Hey all, at this point seeing Nissan bringing out nicer products - Frontier, Titan - but of course still no serious SUV, I'm very very interested in Rivian and the future of EV off-roading. Even though it was a PR stunt, they took the R1T on the Trans America Trail (TAT) across the US with surprising good results. Very capable trucks with the torque vectoring and instant power, drive motors at each corner. Charging stations are put up on most popular trailheads, network is getting bigger.

It looks like I might jump on this instead of going Jeep, Toyota, Bronco route. Not really interested in the Cybertruck, too strange. The future really is just about here IMO. I am keeping my X for a while yet as a secondary rig, still love wheeling it, a bit more rare each day!

Who else here is on this EV path?

It's an inevitable thing for me. I know I'll still have my gasoline powered toys. But for me the EV daily makes a lot of sense. And while I love the idea of an EV off roader from a torque / Power / drivetrain perspective, the battery technology needs to get a lot better for me to trust being out in the middle of nowhere and someone would have to make something that I actually like.

I've seen a lot on the Rivean, and yeah, it looks pretty capable. But holy ufck it's ugly!

I think I'd be more inclined to get an F150 Lightning and tow my gas powered toy.

in 10 years they might be worthy.
Battery is still early. bet cost more to change out and dispose of the battery Vs new Vehicle. Or really close. Such as the " Bolt " Half the cost of new. Buddy had to get Electrician to wire in the charge Told not to charging Vehicle inside the garage. Due to High risk of Battery explosive fires & highly Toxic Fumes. WTF..

Need to find nice Generator that will charge the dang thing, while out in the Woods. state campsite to campsite for the civilized campers. this would be nice. Where folks see Gravel, and shift into 4Whl mode. haha.

Will i be able to plug in my Beer Fridge and Ice maker??.. Asking for the group.. ;-)

Gonna keep the X till it's no longer drives, and or parts are no longer around. Or still stuck on some dam container ship in the ocean.

I get it, that front end looks so derpy, but.......when I saw this, I'm sure someone will come up with armor, first thing I will cover those lights, that front looks much better (pardon the diff showing underneath, lol, just a render of the R1S :D ). I think the rest of the truck looks good as-is.

Outside of California and a few major cities, the non-Tesla DC charging infrastructure is too underdeveloped to make long-distance EV driving practical. Go to plugshare.com and set the filter to CCS/SAE only and see what I mean. This shows all public DC fast chargers that aren't Tesla Superchargers (which are currently exclusive to Tesla). There are plenty of DC chargers in densely populated areas, but in rural areas where you are likely to offroad the DC chargers are at least 100 miles apart.

Having read many trip reports from non-Tesla EV owners, the public DC chargers are frequently broken or not performing to their rated power. So you have to stop every 100 miles to top off the battery just in case the next DC charger on your route is offline. If you use your entire battery to get to a DC charger and it doesn't work, then you are stuck with the nearest alternative which may be a much slower Level 2 charger (hours of charging instead of minutes). Long-distance EV drivers talk about the need for routing with a Plan B and Plan C in mind in case public chargers are broken, which doesn't seem practical for an offroad trip.

I have used abetterrouteplanner.com to map out a 700-mile trip that I frequently make in the Midwest. It takes about 10 hours with two stops for gas in the Xterra, but would take about 14 hours in an EV with six stops at DC charging stations. That's the best case scenario - it could take much longer if any of the DC chargers along the route aren't working.

I recently took a trip from Colorado to upper Minnesota, and what I observed was in MN. there were several new gas stations being built with ev charge stands, and some of the older (or established) stations were adding ev stands, but overall not that many. IMHO.... a smart move for the hotel/motel industry is to install ev chargers for travelers.

This is true, but I'm looking forward to a year or so from now. Rivian IPO is rolling out tomorrow. Things are changing fast on EVs and hopefully charging infrastructure will follow as fast, I'm talking about Level 3 chargers. Believe me, I'm keeping an eye on trail head chargers or nearby. My deposit probably won't be actualized until then anyway.

Electric 4x4…. No thanks. I’ll hold on to my gas powered 4x until they wipe my slobber off the keys when they put me in the nursing home. But on the bright side, electric cars might mean the masses stay close to charging stations and away from remote areas.

Need to carry a 440volt Generator in the bed.. and fuel. For Recharging in the field. While BBQ dead Cow.

Hate the looks of the front with the Lights.. Least cover it with a bra.. Plus add Real looking manly lights.

That is the best option from Nissan Xterra is No more.. ugh..

I get it, most including myself hate that front end, so dorky, but I'm already contacting Hefty and Shrock about aftermarket front armor, see my post #5, that would be totally OK, if the design won't interfere w the electronics. In the mean time might dark-tint those oval LED parts of the headlights to make it more subtle.

My real wish is for Nissan to bring back either a hybrid or full EV Xterra that is as capable as that R1T/R1S.
