Replace Axle Shaft For Egged Out Wheel Studs?

Well, my simple maintenance for an upcoming road trip went south quick.

Two lug nuts wouldn't come off the driver side rear wheel. In the effort to do so, the wheel studs broke free and started free spinning in the hub. They needed to be torched out, but the shop says the holes in the hub have egged out and it needs to be replaced.

However, it seems the whole axle shaft assembly needs to be replaced and pressed in place? This particular shop doesn't have the press but one of their sister locations does. I have enough lugs to re-mount the tire and drive so no issue at the moment.

I just wanted to check with the group. Is this true for a 2010 Xterra S? I can't simply just replace the hub, the whole axle assembly needs to be done?

Thanks all. @TerryD, PM sent your way.

Another question as I found some info while looking for options. I have an automatic, the knurl on the lug bolts for an auto are 12.83mm. The knurl for lug bolts on a manual are 14.35mm.

Is it possible to drill out the stud holes to use the larger knurl lug bolts? Are there serrations on the inside of the lug holes like on the knurl?

I don't see why you couldn't do that. Depends on how bad the holes are egged out.

That could work if you've got a way to hold everything square a you drill. If the existing hole isn't pretty close to centered where it's supposed to be because of the wear, it could cause you to be pulling the stud at an angle when you tighten it and that would eventually stress the new stud and snap it off.

Thanks again. I didn't see what they looked like. I'd have to take the whole thing apart to assess. And I'm not sure how to drill it out that exact.
