lol that would make my trip short. the tires are treadwright 235/85/16 Crawler MT, I have been driving without a spare for over 2 years (well a year technically) and these are just spares that I will be carrying/rotating out.

A week from today. I'm really looking forward to it. I got my major preparations done (rear recovery points). Still gotta do the CB (I have no idea how I'm going to run the antenna cable), and pack my gear. But I won't do that until the day before, and I won't pack my ice chest until the morning we leave.

I really hope we won't need it at all, but I am so happy you have a winch, James. Can't begin to tell you how reassuring that is.

lol well Jason, as I have high doubts we will need it, I am sure all of us have driven sandy environments enough to navigate hazards. But i do usually come over prepared for trips like this. I still have not wired up my aux battery and switch, as well as even touch my cb for reinstall. I still haven't a clue what we will bring with us yet and we (wife and I) need to sit down and make a list. I still need to brush down rust on my undercarriage and paint too.

On the off chance we might splash through some saltwater, you might want to hold off on brushing down that rust until after next weekend.

Yeah, if I had the money to buy every single thing I thought we "might" need on this trip, I would be way over prepared too. I'm not too worried about the terrain, but being off the beaten path and out of cell phone range tends to make me a tad concerned. Your winch allays a lot of those concerns.

I already have an antenna mount, I just don't know which interior panels I want to pull (to tell the truth, I don't want to pull any of them) in order to run the cable in a hidden manner. It's also really hot outside and I've already spent enough time in the heat this week doing the bumper and the Volant, and some actual work related stuff.

That does help a bit though. Thanks!

On my first gen, I didn't really want to pull the panels either so what I did was run the cable under the flat door piece (door kick?) and what I did was gently tuck the cable under the plastics and routed it along, and did the same for the rear door kick plastic...tucked it in between carpet and the plastic kick and kept on routing it to the back (this part will be tricky for 2nd gens since no carpet back there but if you got a mat, that'll work) and on out on top of the hatch weatherstrip (no leaks) and routed it up to the antenna.

I didn't have any problems using the CB.

I have been exploring with just the one vehicle for awhile now with no one else to help me should something happen. I try to cover all my bases, so over the years I have picked up a few things here and there that I would need and would probably never need. I am sure we will be ok, even if someone destroys a hub and off comes the wheel too... I have a plan to get us out of there. If someone manages to bury themselves up to the frame... there is a plan also. Honestly I will have to get the x weighed again when i fit all the gear into it after we leave, because I know I may be pushing at least 500lbs extra in gear. I have even been trained in combat first aid (doubt we will ever need it).

One of the times I was at the PINS some guys I got fishing tips off of later that day were headed back home so I waved them off only to find them 7 miles later stranded with no fuel. They had over 30 miles to go and lucky for them, we decided to leave early. I had just topped off with the spare 5 gal can right before we started to leave and ended up having to figure out how to siphon it back out to give to them. Well the x has a anti siphon mesh somewhere in the fill tube and I even tried driving up a dune to allow some gas to flow into the tube with no success, not to mention it was already dark.

These guys said they would wait for me to go to a gas station and come back, but we were 30 miles from the road and the sand was super soft which would lead to at least a 2 hour wait in the dark. I told them I would figure something out and I wasn't going to leave them out there with the tide rising especially where their truck died. Then I realized I should take of the return line in the engine bay, and start the truck..... worked like a charm and i gave them 5 gallons of gas. They were extremely surprised I thought of that and so was I.

I didn't ask for anything and they kept insisting to give me what i thought was $10..... As they drove away my wife looked at the bill and it was instead a $100 bill. When i did the return line thing, they told were in amazement and would have not thought about it talk about karma. My wife says she doesn't understand how I come up with or how I react so well to emergencies or times of need. I am a thinker, and that I know

Yeah, I'm not too worried about mechanical breakdowns and such. Mostly I'm concerned with someone getting stuck below the tide line with the tide incoming, or a recovery gone wrong and someone getting hurt. That's why one of us having a winch and all of us having good recovery points makes me feel so much better. Also, it's hot, and if we can avoid having to dig someone out, that will make me very, very happy.

the only thing that is really concerning me is any type of overheating out there.... that is my weakness

ditto.

I'll make sure to check my coolant levels and make sure the rad, condensor, & alternator are clean before I head down.

Bring as much water as you think you might need, in case the rigs or the drivers need it. I'm bringing at least a case.

We scooped up another Xterra driver from TNX. Metzican is gonna tag along with us. Johann, do you know if Dustin is coming? I know he doesn't post much here. I guess I'll PM him.

What the hail!?!

Are you sure he isn't just selling his lift parts so he can start over again? He builds it up and tares it down when he gets bored or doesn't like it.

So I went down to Spring and started to overheat on I-45.

I'll need to check the coolant level after she cools down.

He was gonna sell me his bumper earlier, but I change my mind because it was going to cost too much.

Just checked TNX. SL33P3R is returning to stock to trade for a 2012 Frontier.

Bump.

Added coolant on Sunday and I haven't overheated yet. Been pushing it hard after work to see if it would get hot and all is normal.

I plan on getting to the Port Arthur Walmart between 7 & 7:30a so I can get foods, fill up gas can, etc. I get up at 4a everyday, so this will be nothing.

I STRONGLY advise y'all get a fishing license at the Academy Sports and Outdoors in Port Arthur and not the Walmart. You can get the license at any register at Academy.

The Academy isn't that far from Walmart.

Something to be aware of.
http://galvestondailynews.com/story/326446/
Everyone bring a good first aid kit with something to clean cuts and such, and no one goes in the water without shoes. We had a similar problem in Port Fourchon/Grand Isle last year. A friend of a friend had a cut on his ankle. He put his foot in the water once while cranking his boat up on the trailer. He was feverish and hallucinating by the end of the next day, and had to have his foot amputated. The warnings at Galveston and Bolivar Peninsula have been lifted, but that's no reason to throw caution to the wind.

Here's the current reported levels:

Johann, are you bringing an ice chest for fish? Because I don't plan to take anything we catch back home. If you're gonna have a chest I'm gonna give all my catch to you. Good tip on the Academy thing.

Yeah, a woman here had a flesh eating disease that took limbs etc. She's finally on the mend.

I check my first aid kit from time-to-time.

No idea if I am keeping fish. If I am going to spend the night down there, it wouldn't be a good idea to keep fish.

Did a full fluid change on the X. All synthetics changed out, new oil filter, rad flushed and filled, front and rear diffs changed, tranny checked, washer fluid added, and tire pressure checked.

All I need to do now, is clean out the X and make sure I have everything I need in my tool/recovery drawer.

Ugh, I remember doing that on my Focus, Jessica's Focus, her brother's SRT-4, and a my friend Erich's MX-3. I hate changing wheel studs.

Mike and I decided to sleep as late as possible and just take the main highways to Port Arthur instead of coming through Cameron, and we're loading our gear tomorrow. Hitting the road at 0500. I doubt I'll have a chance to use it, but I'm gonna grab my snorkling gear from my dad's house.

Are y'all grabbing breakfast on the way or did you want to eat somewhere before wheeling?

We'll probably eat before we get there. 4 hours is a long drive with no food.

Also dunno if we're gonna bring any fishing gear. I left my good stuff at work, and I'm not making a three hour round trip this afternoon to go get it. My dad is going fishing this weekend, so I'm not gonna take his tackle box, which basically leaves me with the crap freshwater tackle. And since I'm not gonna keep anything I catch, I don't really see the point of paying for the license.

And, to top it off, my tent is dry rotted from storing it in my dad's shed instead of my storage unit. So I'm not bringing my camping gear either. :/

At least I got my snorkling gear, so if we have to stop for someone's overheating, I'll have something to do besides sweat in the sand. :D
