You guys are crazy, I just saw this thread for the first time. Im gonna talk to a friend that has driven this area a little ways before and see what he says about the terrain and things that can puncture tires...I only have one spare guys!

Can we get a clarification on all the details listed on the first post so when I come back to this it will be right there and I don't have to search all post to find it again?

OP edited to include all relevant info.

Please let me know if you're going. I don't want to leave Port Arthur until everyone who's going gets there.

so do yall think a 2wd will work here? I leave to san diego for 7 days friday and will be back in time for this.. also what would be some essential gear needed for a trip like this or NXM, (trying to talk the wife into giving me that trip for my birthday and take the fam).. thanx. i guess it depends on what i would have to buy and if i could get it before this adventure...

Honestly, I don't know whether a 2wd could make it. Maybe, maybe not. None of us have been out there before. That's kind of what this first trip is for, to check out the area and see if it can be done solo, or in 2wd, etc. At the bare minimum, I would say don't go solo unless you have a reliable winch, sand anchor or Pull Pal, Hi-lift jack or Bushranger X-jack, a shovel, and possibly sand ladders, and a decent supply of food and water. All of those things are of course, just in case of the worst case scenario, and I hope we don't have to use any of it. That's one of the reasons I organized this first run to have multiple vehicles. I don't have a hi-lift, but I know Johann does. James has a winch. We all have solid recovery points to latch onto. By pooling resources and know-how, this tiny little expedition becomes that much safer. We may not end up needing any of them, but better to have them and not need them, etc.

But, don't let that discourage you. It is, after all, mostly beach driving, which I do a lot of. My last Xterra was 2wd and it did very well in sand, and I've yet to actually need my 4wd on the beach (but of course I've used it!). We'd love to have you along if you're willing to try. You'd be surprised at the trails some guys conquer in 2wd Xterras. If you get stuck, we can get you unstuck.

We certainly will. I'll also have a go-pro knock off as a dash cam. And I'm sure Johann will have his Flip cam.

So I was reading up and apparently sand ladders aren't such a good idea for heavier, gear-laden vehicles? damage the tires and underside of the truck, etc? I've never used them so I don't know, but I read you can accomplish the same thing with lengths of shag carpeting, without risking damage. And there's my random thread drop-in.

I wish I was closer, this trip sounds like a lot of fun...

I think I've read the exact same post you did. It makes some valid points, but as far as heavier rigs are concerned, I believe most Xterras don't count. Even heavily loaded, we're in about the 6000lb range. I don't think you'd see damage to tires from a sand ladder in that weight class. But I could be wrong. I've used make shift sand ladders in the past with success, and no damage, but I've also seen rednecks attempt to accomplish the same thing with a plank of wood and done nothing more than turn the piece of wood into a missile that the tire fired out from under the truck. Every piece of equipment has its pluses and minuses, Sand ladders are no exception. Use with caution, and understanding of what you're doing, and they can be real time savers, as well as back savers, and truck savers.

For anyone looking to get some, I recommend MAXTRAX. They're lighter and safer and won't burn your hands after being tied to the roof in the hot sun. But I also wouldn't store them in the sun long term.

I have been saying that for years... but I choose my trails and tracks wisely carefully. When the lockers ever get here I will be unstoppable lmao.

No changes so far. Heard from Johann yesterday; he is still a go. Barring any family emergencies at the last minute, I am definitely going to be there.

I know that feeling. My rear bumper from Maxterra is coming today. I was getting nervous that it wouldn't get here in time and I wouldn't have any rear recovery points if I needed them.
Trying to get my CB set up and tuned too, but it's so freaking hot outside. I'm gonna wait until later this afternoon.
