I asked TJTJ the exact same question a few weeks ago because I was in the same boat wondering what's the "better" way to mount them. I'll post his replies to help out in the same way it helped me.

"I leave the boots off so I can see what's going on.


There's a squeegee-like ring on the piston that cleans it off anyway on the way into the body.

I actually doubt it makes THAT much difference in boot/no boot...but, I go no boot and piston down.

For a monotube, they work either way...it doesn't really matter.

I like to mount them body up/piston down...because it puts the body up higher, out of harm's way, etc....and provides less target down there TO damage.

If the body gets dented, etc, it can kill the shock, because the piston ring inside may then be blocked from its usual in/out travel in the body, etc."
