Rear cargo under cargo area?

Has anyone thought to cut out the floor board in the cargo area, I remove my rear tre, so in that area, I could just cut out a good sized square and make a box under the carpet? Just wondering what issues I need to worry about, but I want my space and want to have storage under the carpet to keep it clean. Any ideas?

I thought about it. But I still keep my spare under there. It would be cool to open the floor storage lid and have a huge storage box. On my 2nd gen. Not sure about the 1st gen.

I would say look underneath and check for any frame or cross brace that may get in the way. Then measure from underneath for how much u can cut. You could maybe find a aluminum utility box that u could bolt to the floor board from underneath. As long as you don't put to much stuff it should be fine. If ur gonna put some heavy stuff in there then make a crossbrace between the frame to support the box.

Something like this

As long as there room underneath where the spare goes. Bolt it to the floor and cut a hole. Seal it with some seam sealer.
I would definitely brace under it.

If u want to do it right and have access to a welder then I would make a frame out of some small square tubing. Maybe 1-1.5. That frame is braced between frame rails and then the box sits in it.
I'm pretty sure the floor there is braced and if you cut a big hole then it will need bracing elsewhere.

We've done this many time in other vehicles, (speaker boxes, gun safes, fuel tanks, etc...), and it works out great. One thing to keep in mind though, you shouldn't mount it to the frame and the body, because the body is not solid mounted and so it will flex different from the frame (this is bad, lol). We build a frame similar to what was posted, (out of 1.5" angle), but with wider wings at the top to span out the weight better, then we cut the hole and drop it in from the top. We sheet the whole thing from inside, weld and seal it up, and it becomes part of the car. If it were me, I'd nab the plastic floor part (with the lid piece) from a 2ng gen, from the wrecking yard, and start from there.

I'm gonna make it part of the body and weld it together, and make supports. As far as 2nd gen plastic, that won't really fit well will it? Or do you mean for the cargo area it's self, not the top of the box/ flooring itself

He's sayin to use the 2ndgen plastic floor section cause it would look stock and have a lid to access the storage. You would probably have to modify the plastic a bit but it would look slick.

id like to do this with a spare rim and a pancake compressor. weld it all together and weld or bolt underneath. been thinking on it for awhile

I've thought about it. But with the amount of stuff I store in the back of my x. Anything that goes in there would have to be never/almost never used items.

Yeah considered it but with the camping gear or repair tools on top. It would mean I would have to completely unload before I could access it. I've had to access the jack once while loaded and what a chore. I've considered perhaps a auxiliary fuel tank. A plastic fuel cell like a race car has hung up under where the spare used to be connected via pump to the stock fuel fill. On long offroad trips fuel gets to be a live or die issue at times. With a extra 10gallons reserve or 1/2 tank it would be handy.

If I was going to weld cargo boxes anywhere it would be under the left rear seat cushion. Plenty of space completely concealed and easy to access. Nice deep container to hold recovery gear and tools would be great.

This is actually a genius idea! Make a panel that is easily removable like the gas tank panel on the right. Yeah. That'd be awesome.

My sub trunk is home to some lighting relays and my Blue Sea fuse box. Its also where the amp for my stereo gets it hot from. Once I get things a little more finished I'll take some pictures.

If anyone has measured the surface area under this seat, how large an opening would there be to drop the box in? I just found this thread and this would save me tons of room before I finish my rear box addition.

Clayboy...I got under the X to take measurement yesterday. To my sorrow I found our HUGE AZZ muffler sitting there. Unless you change your exhaust system there's NO ROOM to place a box there.

Oh that sucks haha. I have a cherry bomb extreme so my muffler is much smaller than stock and tucked out of the way. If there wasn't a muffler there, what size box could you install? this seriously sounds like a great place to put a recovery strap and possibly the air compressor for an air locker or two :)
