Rear bumper Mock Up IDEA

Ok So Im kicking around this idea for my rear bumper that will be far off in the future, Or I get a welder and teach my self how to weld.
So I as you may have seen in my build thread I have a gobi driver side ladder. And most of the tire carrier rear bumpers dont allow for the DS Gobi ladder, most are made for the PS ladder. Anyway so i have mocked this up,
rearbumpermock.png

I want to do something that doesnt swing out, but drops down and swings out because I think this would be convenient and even if was camping i could have makeshift table :w00t:.

Now I need to get some feed back here, if someone likes the design please feel free to build it and send it to me that would be awesome, I mean build it for your self and let me know how much i rock.

Anyway it still needs some sort of latch or lock to secure it from dropping down and jostling around and what not, and maybe some kinda of bumpstop or something hard to say without having it built. It probably also has room to add on a jerry can attachment as well.

So let me know what you guys think, This might work on a first gen as well I know they are different sizes but probably not that much
Maybe if James at RLC could chime in here as well.
So here it is pick it apart, or love it either way lets here it.

For a daily driver, a swing down is going to get old really fast. picking up that tire and carrier every time you want to get in the back of the truck gets to be a pain in the rear pretty quickly. One of the nicest parts of a swing away is that it holds the weight of the tire when you are opening, and closing it.

For the part of makng room for the ladder, all that you need to do is offset the tire and hindge. The farther the hindge is the better.

Yeah, Granite is right. You'll be tired of a flip down within a week. The beauty of a swing away carrier is they can be opened closed with one hand. If you're already to the point of designing your own, just flip the swing away part to the opposite side to make room for your Gobi ladder. Basically do a mirror image of one that is made for a passenger side ladder. No need to reinvent the wheel, so to speak.

How about a rear tire carrier that can either swing down or swing away? When I was in Germany, they had windows, in the houses, that could do either.

Ratt, you're a CAD drafter. I can easily design one that could do both, but I'd need someone else to draw up the plans for me. We should collaborate!

No, a one way hinge to keep it cheap and simple, then the tube that is attached to the hinge is inside the tube that the tire carrier is welded to, with grease zerts to keep it smooth, and a pair of pins to secure it in its upright position. I will try to hand draw it and scan it.

Indeed Ratt, indeed. I was thinking about this but the hinge for that seems like it would be a nightmare to design. I'm not into the cargo area to often maybe once a week, I put the dog in the back seat. I was thinking about trying to utilize some kind of crank to lower and raise the drop down arm or a a lever, I want to make it simple enough my wife could do it, but yeah a swing arm would probably work best, however I doubt very much she could lift the spare tire, hence the lowering idea

I disagree... seeing as I'm 1 of the few people that actually has a flip down tire carrier.. I don't mind it at all... in all honesty it's no different than having to flippin out all the time.. plus this way if you're in a tight parking space you can still open the hatch in you don't have to worry about the tires swinging to the car next to you

This is a very quick sketch of what I had in mind for a swing-away/flip down tire carrier. I have the carrier and tire flipped around with the carrier to the outside instead of toward the hatch. That way you can access the lugs when the carrier is flipped down instead of having to unbolt the tire before lowering it. Also makes picking it back up a lot easier. Also, the hinge extends out past the bumper over the plastic endcap, to kick the tire over to make room for a driver's side Gobi ladder. Damn, now that I've thought about it, I may have to do a little more work on this and actually build one. Got to find me a welder first.

Luke, I have a 33" on an alloy wheel and I don't want to lift that damn thing up. Course, I have two ruptured discs in my back.

The swing/flip thing is always a factor if people are parked behind you/or you are backed into a spot, etc.

You already need a little room to be able to stand behind the truck and flip the rear hatch up as it is.

If you ALSO need room to swing a carrier gate, or, room to swing a flip down gate down....well, that ADDS to the space behind you you'll need to open the hatch.

If you need to LOAD stuff into the cargo hold from the rear hatch....a flip down tire carrier will be between you and the opening when flipped down.

Reaching OVER something like that, to reach into the hold, is asking, nay begging, to slip a disk, strain your back, etc.

:D

If you want something DIFFERENT, perhaps make the carrier SLIDE to one side, and then pivot around the rear quarter panel to open.

:D

Hydraulics my friend... hydraulics.
This would be pretty BA! Then lifting would only be an issue, of lifting it off and on in the event of a tire change. This would be pretty awesome, but how would they fair out in real world weather? Think it would take one heavy lifting hydro or 2? Ill play with this idea could be doable.

Why don't you do both. Have the ability to swing across like a normal tire carrier but if you pull a pin on either side you can drop it down straight back.

Has anything happened with you bumper build? J Everett's sketch looks like a good idea with enough room to open the hatch and not hit the tire.

Trying to find more pics,

But this was the setup on my buddies old X before it was totalled.. Richard in NC made this years ago

There are two plates welded to the roof rack that allowed for a quick-release pin to go thru.. so just pull the pin and she swings down.

You see if I was building a drop down carrier I would think it would make more sense to build a cage on the back side of the tireso it goes skid plate/tire/hatch. I know theres a bolt on one for jeeps I think spyder builds them but Im not positive.
