Rear Brakes not Grabbing

Winter is upon us and as I drive down a small embankment covered in ice, my ABS kicks in and slides with only the front wheels on the ice. The rear brakes do not seem to be doing anything. As it is winter and miserable to do anything outside, I have not yet checked the function of the rear brakes, Is this normal? No real grabbing action in the rear? 2011 Pro4x Stock.

The ABS is on all the wheels and the rear wheels are going to be modulated with the front when it's active.

Get on dry road and do a hard stop. If it seems to stop in a reasonable distance or doesn't act like the fronts are doing all the work, I would say it's just that you're not used to the system. The brakes on these work quite well in stock form.

Are you running larger tires, a lift, or any particularly heavy load out?

Well, I'm a fan of the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT all terrains. I've had 4 sets on different vehicles in a few different sizes and I've always been pleased with them. They are quieter than my Nitto Terra Grapplers and lighter. They are louder than the Michelin LTX M+S I had on my truck but I opted to run them so my Xterra and Truck use the same tire and I can keep good tires on my truck and wear them out and torture them on the Xterra.

What kinds of terrain do you use them in, and what do you mostly use the Xterra for? That makes a difference on tire selection.
