Has putting these type of events together in the northeast become a waste of time and effort?

I sure appreciate it. Winter wheeling is my favorite. It gets me out of the house when I would otherwise be sitting on the couch. Unfortunately, I don't have as much time to spend on these forums anymore. And I know this wasn't directed at me because I don't think I have missed one Northern eXposure since I started the crazy hobby. That being said, the poor X doesn't have the same following it used to...

Yes! This is always my hope. I get very little more than aggravation helping to organize a few events or by posting these announcements.

It seems more and more as though we go run trails with the same groups of friends. This is always fun but does nothing to help keep the interest alive in our preferred make/model vehicles or hobby.

ECXC is the one exception and then folks complain when their non-Xterra is not welcome...

NEXterra members continue to help organize events, secure venues, try to set up trail groups and trail leaders, once in a while put together an event logo, shirts, stickers and then post to this and the few other Xterra boards still around.

Giving folks new to this silliness an opportunity to try it out with a friendly, welcoming group is a small way of giving back to a club and community that welcomed us when we started down this trail.

There is certainly no fortune or fame, more like a negative balance, ridicule from our more hardened wheeling buddies and disappointment in, what appears to be, lack of interest.

I changed the title of this thread, maybe it will help...

Also, as much as I love Rausch, I think there needs to be serious thought into other locations (AOAA). I think the cost of rausch is prohibitive for someone who is new to the hobby and just learning.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

For me running trails in the winter can be more of a challenge than at other times of the year and I’m less familiar with AOAA than Rausch. I get lost at AOAA every time I go and had folks driving in circles the last time I lead in there.

Getting lost can be fun but not when I’m running the show and want to make sure everyone gets out of the park okay at the end of the day.

Just to preface this, I am talking about the idiots in our small notajeep group in this. We aren't a club. Just some morons that like to smash our trucks in the woods.

We should probably talk about this in person over a beer... but I have only wheeled five times this year. Three of them were Nexterra events. And I am sure my small group has definitely come off as pricks at times. But it is not intentional. I think some of it is that we are jaded to the sport. We go all the time (or used to), and we all know each other really well, so it feels hard for people to approach us. And some of it is just human nature.

I (we) would happily lead a green group around. Well, maybe preferably a blue group. But you get the idea. Especially at the events. We hope to get people hooked, so they come back and join us more. And we would love for there to be more events. If we could help, we would be interested. We aren't in competition. Our little one-off trips just give us the opportunity to do dumb things so that we can come to the events and socialize and not have it be about us getting to hit the right trails.

Anyway, the TLDR is:
We would love to help.
We wish there were more events.
Sorry, we are jerks.

I haven't found you guys (not-a-jeep) to be anything else but friendly and helpful to everyone at these events. All of you always offer help to event organizers all the time; rounding up and leading groups, even hosting bbq's.

I think that new folks are always intimidated by old timers especially when we're interacting with each other (breaking balls). I used to have a sticker on my back glass "It's a 1st Gen thing, you wouldn't understand" and "YOUR RIG SUCKS".

DSC_0275.JPG

..talk about being a jerk...

You guys are certainly less intimidating than "the Brooklyn Russians" were back in the day and much less "clickish" than some groups that just show up to an event without even signing up, don't help or participate, do their own thing and then wonder why they're disliked.

Folks that signed up with a "Willingness to LEAD a Group" are helping.

NEXterra is trying to get back to the pre-COVID normalcy of at least six runs a year; April Fool's Run, Back to School Run, ECXC, Halloween Run, Northern eXposure Run, Toys For Tots Run

I don't think you guys are jerks and at the end of the day that's really all that matters, right?

(man, I really am a jerk...)

Since you continue to view this somehow as the greatest offense ever, allow me to inform you of the exact circumstances. You nor anyone else has simply asked "why" we didn't sign up, so I'll tell you. And to clarify, I don't wonder at all why you have a problem with me, as you've made it readily clear many times since then on this and other forums.

As you know, I questioned the language of your waiver. Because of said questions, I had no less than two Nexterra members explicitly say they didn't want me riding with them. So right off the bat, I was informed I was not welcome.

For ECXC 2022, a local buddy of mine was buying a suspension off of somebody that was attending, and asked if I'd be willing to meet that person at Rausch because he would be out of town and I had talked about eventually wanting to try it out. I agreed that I would go, but had strict time constraints of not being able to get there until late Friday and having to depart by Saturday afternoon.

The week of, his plans got cancelled and he decided he could go too, which he did. The reason neither of us signed up was that on top of the ridiculous amount of money we were already paying in Rausch fees, we were not going to pay the full $45 Nexterra fee plus $20 late registration fee, knowing we could only wheel 3/4 of a day instead of the full three days, and not being able to attend two dinners and a raffle. Plus in my case, I had been told ahead of time I wasn't welcome.

The first person we met there was the original founder of Nexterra, and when he asked if we were part of the group we said we didn't sign up because we couldn't attend most of it, had to leave before the raffle, and it didn't make sense to pay an extra $65 on top of Rausch fees just to ride with a larger group. He agreed and said that made sense. I left out anything about the disinvites ahead of time. I didn't bring up any of your drama with him or anyone else I met that weekend because that's not my style.

Every single person I talked to and interacted with there was nothing but pleasant and welcoming. I believe if you ask anyone who met me or talked to me, they'll tell you the exact same thing about me. I had somebody complain here on the forum that I didn't wave to them, and when I asked who that was I realized it was somebody I did wave to, but he was climbing an obstacle at the time and didn't see me. Maybe he waved to me, but I didn't see it because I was walking toward the edge of a dropoff over large rocks. I made absolutely sure to wave to him Saturday and got a wave back. That's the only remotely negative 'interaction,' and it wasn't in person.

On Saturday, the person we met up with (who was selling the suspension stuff) wanted to ride with us, and it was my impression that you all were trying to give him a hard time, and instead of coming to talk to us, you sent him with waivers for us to sign under some dubious reasoning, and I'm guessing part of that reason is you thought I would refuse to sign it and you could prevent him from riding with us. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but that was my impression of it, and I thought it was petty and stupid, much like the multiple complaints I've seen since about two people with Xterras who dared to be at the same public place as your club event without kissing the Nexterra rings first.

You should know that the reason I had no problem signing the waiver is because when I met with an attorney that specialized in corporate recreation (for my own local venture) in December 2021, I had an extra few minutes and asked him to look at the Nexterra waiver and one from another group. Of Nexterra's, he said it was "an obvious cut and paste job," called part of it "stupid," and "would not cover" part of what was intended. If you truly believe it's necessary to protect the club and members, you should have an attorney review it. As much as I wanted to comment that last year after all the crap from you and others, I decided to let it go because why bother -- I figured all parties were mature enough to move past it. Obviously the butthurt at least for some people carries on today.

Let's summarize and be 100% clear: I was told I was not welcome to join your events, and even if that weren't the case, it would be outright stupid to pay an additional $65 just to ride one trail at the same time as a few others and pay for food and raffle tickets I wouldn't be able to use, when I could do a different trail for free. I'm not apologizing for that, and if you want to continue to whine about it every time you reference that event so be it. I can't stop you, but I hope you find a way to just f***ing get over it. Now that you know the exact reasons I didn't register, hopefully you can.

If we ever cross paths in person, I'm enough of a grown-up to be willing to shake your hand and put past stuff in the past. But that requires two people to do it. If you think I got the wrong impression about that morning, so be it. It doesn't matter. If you disagree about the waiver, it doesn't matter. I'm not going to continually wallow and dwell on it like you apparently have been. I'm willing to make this the last time it's ever discussed.

Too much to respond at the moment. I'm not in charge but personally I'm willing to let it all go if that's cool or respond if it's not. Call it.

This is literally the first time I’ve ever brought it up, responded to it, or even acknowledged it since the event, so I vote just let it go

Test Drive
Team, a couple of questions completely unrelated to the January trail ride. But, I think you all can give me some good advice:

1. I got the infamous P0340 code last Thursday morning along with slow starting and the VDC and Slip lights. I replaced the bank 1 cam shaft position sensor on Friday. What I'm wondering is should I replace the bank 2 while I'm at it? I've heard you should do both at the same time and I've also heard don't fix it if it's not broke. Thoughts?

2. Manual transmission fluid - Nissan OEM, Redline MT85? What do those of you driving manuals recommend?

Thanks! Tom

I've been wanting to go to rausch and or aoaa. rausch seems to have a lot of rock crawling (at least the media i see on event pages) and I'm more into the "overlanding" scene with nice trails/scenery (not trying to break my xterra 4 hours from home). also it's expensive for one day and my X is a gas guzzler so driving 3-4hrs one way and pay all the fees just keeps me from going but I do want to go eventually.

No worries, I understand.

Those of us old timers still possessing enough brain cells remember with fondness attending the now legendary "Ice Storm" run, born from the old, now defunct "XteraFirma" board, at the now closed "Paragon" park in Hazelton back in 2005.

This run form my desire to keep alive that runs tradition of a winter run at the beginning of each year.

Hope to make out on the trail with you some other time.

I think you would be happy with and have a blast on the green trails at either park.

I may have lost a few screws along the way, but I’ve driven 7 hours each way to run blacks 8-10 times a year for a long time now. Just now started trailering it there.
