Rapid ticking noise coming from steering area

I have had my 2 other friends that are mechanics look at this issue but they cannot pinpoint it either. I'll list out the details:

1. A constant, rhythmic, ticking sound emanates from the steering column. It changes in tone and speed of ticking depending on RPM speed
2. NOT a lifter tick, you cannot hear it from the engine bay, if you put your ear near the pedals you can hear it clearer
3. Checked for anything that is obviously loose, checked for leaks or any other damaged part, no dice.
4. Steering does not seem to be affected, no other sounds arise when steering either. This includes both low and high speed steering inputs
5. Checked with Nissan, 2004 steering recall was performed a couple years back by the previous owner. It was done and verified by a Nissan techs

One friend says it could be the clockspring, but isn't 100% on that. While this isn't causing any issues to speak of, and has been going on since the previous owner I'm not TOO worried about it. I would, however, like to get it sorted if I could. Any ideas?

Anything? I've looked in my engine bay, for anything obvious. Manifold looks fine, no vacuum leaks, engine sounds fine. I'm stumped here, I don't want to take it in for a diagnostic but if I have too maybe I will
