PSA: If you know a license plate, you can look up the VIN

Some may already know this, but if you see a car for sale from a private party and the tag is visible, just google “license plate to vin” and any of the top results will let you put in the plate and get the VIN.

What you see directly on the page varies by site, but you can generally see sales history, registrations, recalls, and details on the trim. Some places will show accident and repair history as well.

I just saw an Xterra listed for $18,500 with the guy saying he was selling it because there’s “nowhere to wheel” (there is) but he’d “listen to offers.” But he bought it for $13,900 or less just under two years ago, and the only modifications were a spacer lift with CBC and getting into a fender bender. In other words, he knows the used market is tight and he’s looking for a sucker to turn a big profit.
