PS4 vs Xbox 1

So I haven't decided if I'm going to buy one of the new consoles this year.

But which one are you going with and why?

I've always been an Xbox guy, since the original. I never had a PS2 and I had a PS3 for a while and didn't like it so I've stuck with 360. Seems like everything I hear about neXbox is something to do with Kinect (doesn't interest me as a single 22 year old man). PS4 really seems to be going after the traditional gamers like myself instead of the broad approach like Wii or neXbox. So if and when I buy into the next gen game consoles I may very well jump over to the Playstation side of things.

Thoughts?

The upcoming generation may be the last one I buy. Since I'm getting older I don't play as much as I used too.

Still interested to see what Xbox brings to the table after Sonys announcement.

I'm really on the fence with both of them. I had the "Three Sh--" when it came out and I "Red-Ringed"... twice. So I got an PS3. The only 2 reasons I'd go Xbox is for their greater number of console specific titles such as Forza and MAYBE Halo. I'm not a Windows person, despite having a Windows based laptop and I definitely don't like Microsoft. But since I have more friends who play the boxor-o-roxor (get that reference), I'll probably end up with the "720".

Once upon a time, I was the world's biggest Playstation advocate. As far as I was concerned, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Tekken, Metal Gear Solid, and SOCOM were the greatest franchises anywhere in the world, and the original Xbox was simply a Microsoft gimmick that wouldn't survive the next generation console battle.

And then, the next generation battle was on our doorsteps, in our homes. Microsoft had a strong following with the Halo crowd, and then Halo 3 blew me and everyone else away. It was phenomenal game, and we were still in the infancy of developers learning what could be done with the new consoles. And yet, I'm still hearing how developers have not yet tapped into the full power of the Cell processor in the PS3. Really, Sony? What are they waiting for?! The technology has only been available to them for seven years. Are you withholding info from developers that would allow them to exploit the Cell to its fullest, thereby hindering development and slowing sales? Or is it more likely that Sony has blown the Cell's capabilities out of proportion and flat out lied to us consumers the whole time? It would certainly explain why they have abandoned the technology and returned to an x86 architecture for the PS4. Then there's the online gaming systems. Sure PSN is free. You get what you payfor. XBL may be a bit pricey, but it delivers 99% reliable and seamless online match making and content delivery. And I don't have to spend twenty minutes downloading and installing updates to my 360 every time I power it on, which seems to be the case with the PS3. Add to that the fact that they continue to force the same old formats down our throats when it comes to RPG's instead of hearing what we, the gamers, want to see in our games, and it's clear Sony has lost their way. I will not be buying another Sony console.

I am anxiously awaiting news of the Xbox, but if it's not ready, I don't want to see it released this year. Microsoft, you've already got me sold. I will buy the 720, (or whatever you want to call it), just don't rush it.

Yeah I think PS3 could have been a lot better. I think Sony realized the cell architecture cost them much more money than it was worth and that developers preferred the traditional stuff anyways.

I prefer the Xbox dashboard over the PS3 by far, and I also like Xbox Live much better. I just hope they don't force Kinect down our throats. I'm such a big Halo fan that ill have to play Halo 5 whenever it comes out, but your right about Halo 3. I was already a fan, but the way that game changed online gaming, it was incredible. I just don't think well ever see a jump in quality like that again.

As for Microsoft waiting to release "720" info til after PS4. Ok maybe a good strategy but...if your console is releasing this year you don't have time to make drastic changes to match or better PS4. I'm sure the hardware is pretty much set, maybe some little tweaks here and there as far as interface, but if its releasing this year it's done.

They both should be great systems as long as Sony and Microsoft don't screw them up. Should be an interesting e3.

Well the ps3 will be my last system until my son gets old enough. I use netflix on the ps3 more than anything.ive always been a big ps3 fan over xbox for one reason, no paid memberships. I can log on to pandora, facebook or even here on the ps3 network without spending a dime. Can xbox? As for new ones I just herd new ones from this post

Forgot I started this thread. Some of this may have been discussed in the Xbox 360 thread.

Looks like PS4 will get my money, though it probably won't be this year.

Microsoft is going to completely cut out the used game market. The always online requirement and DRM checks make your game stop working if you don't connect to the Internet for 24 hours. If you buy a disc and give it to your buddy, he may have to pay a fee to even use the game that you own. That is supposedly decided by individual publishers.

PS4 pretty much went for Microsofts jugular at E3. No required connection, buy and share all the used games you want. And they seem to be more focused on games than other entertainment unlike Microsoft.

Ill miss Halo if I do make the switch but that's really about it. I'd like Forza 5 a lot I'm sure, but I expect there to be quality racing games on PS4 too.

I don't see what ppl are upset about regarding the xbox one. I think it looks awesome, the having to be connected to Internet once every 24 hrs isn't a big deal because do you ever turn the Internet off on your xbox? I know I don't. Microsoft can't help what publishers/developers decide to charge for the used game price and that will effect PS4 also. I feel like Microsoft is actually making moves towards a next generation of technology of games with all the kinect integration, I think it's gonna be awesome to enhance the games with voice commands and hand movements which is just a few steps behind actually virtual reality which would be amazing. I will be getting the xbox one when it comes out. I love xbox lol

I've always been an Xbox fan but I won't be buying the new one because of the always online part. A few times in the past I've been without internet for more than 24 hours due to snow. Once I was without power for a week. I used a generator but still had no television or net. Being able to fire up the Xbox and play sure helped pass the time. I'm not a fan of MMOs and generally only go online with my Xbox to check for updates.

I'm pretty much settled on the PS4 because of price and fewer restrictions such as those you mentioned. The only title I will miss will be Forza, but I have always been a long time fan of the Gran Turismo series and have played each of them to at least 80-90% completion. I could care less about kinect. The only game I enjoyed on that waste of money was Fruit Ninja, and I already have that on my iPad and iPhone.

Sony stated that they are not going to have DRM. That means on games published by Sony/SCEA. Microsoft said that they are leaving it up to the publishers, the same publishers that put out games for both consoles. You're out of your mind if you think you're not going to face the same DRM issues with both consoles. Anyone who's played Borderlands 2 on either console knows that if you lose internet access, all your DLC becomes non functional. Digital Rights Management is already here, and most gamers don't even know it.

Also, PSN isn't going to be free anymore. They have to charge for it to be competitive. They simply can't afford to build and maintain the required server capacity to make your online gaming experience operate smoothly without passing the costs onto the consumer.

My decision is already made. The PS4 is impressive architecture. Hardware-wise, both consoles are on an even playing field. But hardware isn't what sells me. The Wii is far less powerful than either the 360 or the PS3, but I played it more than the PS3 because of the experience it delivered. I've had all three consoles for the last 5 years, and the 360 is the one that consistently delivered the best entertainment experience. I'm not going to fight a flame war against Sony and hardcore PS fans, but I'm not going to buy a PS4 either. The only games exclusive to the 3 that I wanted to play were Uncharted, Gran Turismo, and Journey, and even though I owned the console and the games, I never got around to finishing any of them. I can live without them in the next generation.

I preordered my Xbox One yesterday.

Xbox One here. Coming from pc gaming I've learned to live with the world of DRM, and honestly if I plan on playing a game I typically will buy new anyways. As far as the always connected part, I have not played my 360 without an internet connection in years anyway, so not a huge deal for me.

I will never give my money to Micro$oft for anything. Especially a gaming system. I'm sorry, but the Kinect is the ONLY redeeming thing that Xbox has over PlayStation. The graphics suck, the controller is garbage, the console is cheaply made, you can't play the older games...and it still costs more money!

I love the Xbox 360 controller (never really liked the original Xbox controller) sooo much more than the PS3 controller, but I recognize that not everyone would feel the same. That is something you can legitimately have a preference for one way or the other.

However, graphics do not EVER make or break a game. The Wii has terrible graphics but it still sold like mad because the games were fun. And that is ALL that matters. Whether or not you have fun playing a game. Period.

And the Playstation doesn't play the older games either, so that's kind of a moot point.

Those are all the arguments of someone who is loyal to one console without ever having taken the time to see what the competition has to offer.

It's the same as the old Chevy vs. Ford, Nissan vs. Toyota, Nintendo vs. Sega fights. The most vehement arguers against one side or the other were the ones that had never even given that side a chance.

Yeah, never been fond of the PlayStation controller either, but the PS4 controller does look like something I could use. Honestly I like both systems, it's just not feasible for me to get both.

For $500 bucks the Xbox One (really with the name?) will not be getting my bid. As much as I love forza, I own all five of them currently out it's not worth it. Battlefield 4 will certainly be stunning but not for the money. Only if a 128 player multiplayer or at minimum 64 player is confirmed would I consider. The tech in the console is undeniable but I can't justify dropping that kind of money to either A. kill people or B. go fast in a car when I already can. Maybe when the console drops to 3 I would consider it? or if I start getting paid massive amounts of money. The PS4 is a no go too just because the controller is to tiny and retarded for me. also the games tend to be a far cry from what they should be and PSN just sucks. you get what you pay for with that one.

@Prime, the 360 is definitely backwards compatible.

I love my 360, but the "always have to be online" thing is crap. What happens if there is service interruption for longer than 24hrs? Happens sometimes. Especially during storms. The whole, used game this is crap too. I personally think you should be able to play original Xbox games on the 360 and on the Xbox1. And having to pay a fee because you bought a used game? Microsoft is just trying to get more money from people is what it sounds like. It honestly makes no sense to charge people to use a game that they already got money for. People buying used games vs buying new games isn't putting a dent in Microsoft sales. If I get another console, I will definitely be going w/ the PS4.

XBox today released a statement clearly showing they have been paying attention and might be a tad scared. The changes are as follow:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One game
Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today

And people say Microsoft doesn't care... oh wait, I'm sure the only reason they made the changes is cause they were scared of losing to Sony. Doesn't matter much to me, I already pre-ordered an Xbox One before the changes were made, but glad Microsoft is listening.

I heard then brought down the rumor of no used games and constant Internet connection required. Info not guaranteed but its a reliable source

This shows they are at least listening. I don't care if it was just to not lose to Sony. They showed they have at least some understanding of a user based market

I put my deposit down on the ps4.. Walmart is allowing you to put 10% down on either system and pick it up on release day.

Came down to being a game unit vs what ever Xbox is trying to be..

I thought with PS4 Sony was going to start charging for Playstation Network? This very well could be a rumor too since I haven't been following PS4.

I just hope the PS4 does automatic updating without having to pay for it but I doubt it. I turn my 3 on once every couple months and for the first hour it has to update. Then on top of that the game I want to play always has a update that needs to be installed as well.

I heard this awhile back. My bet is its true.

Same here, I put GT5 in and waited at least an hour....it was so bad I played the Xbox while I waited.

Thats been a rumor for close to 3 years, before the initial talks of the PS4. I wouldn't doubt it.

While XBL may be a little more reliable for online gaming, there's no point in worrying about that if your console won't even turn on after 6 months. Just looking a the past. I'm positive they've worked out that kink. Moreover, PS owners are generally "more mature," which is a relative statement. I'm talking about the kids playing games like Call of Duty and Halo. You know what I'm talking about.

You have to have Playstation Plus for online multiplayer with the PS4, but if you don't play online then PSN will be exactly how it is now, just no online multiplayer. To answer the question about updates, the PS4 will relegate all updates to the background while the system is on or in suspend mode. As much as I want a PS4 when it comes out, I won't be preordering a PS4 mainly because there are PS3 games that are coming out that aren't going to be on the PS4. So once I finish those I will pick up a PS4, and hopefully any issues will have presented themselves, like the 360's RRoD, and the PS3's YLoD.

I started this thread a while back before we had a lot of concrete details on either system.

I think both will be good consoles. But seeing as how I don't play games near as much at this point so I'm not getting either for at least the next year. Still don't really know which one I would get, it's probably going to completely come down to the platform exclusives.

I will say Xbox One's announcement and backtracking were handled terribly by MS and I think Sony did a good job capitalizing on it...

EDIT: I am picking up GTA 5 at midnight so that statement about not gaming as much anymore is going to be false for a while lol.

I tried to pre-order an Xbox 1 from game stop and they told me the preorder was over. It was like Sept 1. How absurd. Guess it's good though. With the move and all I can't afford it now anyways.

I'm most likely going Xbox 1 just cause, but it won't be for a couple of months after the release so the bugs can get worked out.......and I'd rather spend my monies on the X since I won't have a payment after mid November :squW00shy:
