The Y60 is home!

In the next few weeks I’ll be repainting all the faded trim, etc. I’m really looking forward to driving it more. She’s free of rust, but as it’s the size of a house in Japan it’s no surprise it was stored outdoors. A quick polish and refresh on the trim should do wonders.

It has a lot of cool options I didn’t expect, tilt meter gauges, headlight wipers, etc.

Finally got some time to drive this thing.

I absolutely love it. Even NA, the TD42 makes good power and is surprisingly quiet. After the holidays I’ll be starting in on lockers bumpers lift, etc.

I’m also finally doing 4:1 gears and a doubler on the X since no one wants to buy it.

The Safari survived its first snow run, and did exceptionally well!

Drove out to Cougar Washington. Home of the longest lava tube in the nation at 2.5miles

Met up with some good friends. SAS 1st Gen and a modded 2nd gen. (Don’t mind the jeeps in the back as they left all their wheelers at home and took their wives vehicles)

ran into a downed tree pretty quickly, thankfully both the loggers watched us take this down.

K02s rule. This thing didn’t get stuck once, even though it only has a factory LSD and open front end.

That looks amazing! Both the truck and the trail!
Thank you! It was good to finally get this thing dirty and compare it to my X.

It’s no wonder these are the king of the bush, they are damn near unstoppable in factory trim. The first issue will be the lack of travel, a 2” Dobinson flexi spring set and some kings will be ordered around January-ish.

Omfg. A y60!! I'm so jealous. Love it. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Thank you! It’s been a dream of mine for a long time, I’m stoked it finally happened. Hopefully the upgrades will start rolling in come the new year, still trying to clear out the Xterra before jumping into this project.

I finally got the Patrol stuck!

Thankfully my friend brought out his delica that’s locked with 5.38s and 35s. Ha

I don’t know if it’s because I’m use to nearly endless flex with the Xterra, or the patrol has pretty limited flex with the sway bars attached, but it ran out of travel leaving the open diff to do what it wants.

Now the fun begins.

This truck being a Japanese market Safari means it’s a 24 volt truck via its dual batteries. I honestly thought this was going to be a nightmare, but I’ve come to like the 24v (it fires off so quickly, even in 30 degree weather). To make the dash/clock/radio function Nissan leaned on Clarion to make a 24v to 12v reducer, but it only is capable of 5amps.

So I need to build a separate 12v circuit using a modern reducer. I’ll be adding a 8 slot fuse panel with switched and constant power for a radio, future gauges, etc.

Also, I took it out in the snow again, no surprises there. It was roughly 215 miles round trip, and as always the safari was flawless.

Headed through the Columbia gorge to hood river.

Caught up with the van gang just outside of Lost lake

We made it to the top of Lolo pass, reaching the north side of Mt. hood.

A little factory flex

The creek was deeper than I thought, ended up with a tire on each end up in the air. Time for lockers. thankfully a new friend has a samurai on Camso tracks.

An Ineos joined us, did really well for a stock truck, but was behind me so I could break the trail for him ha. The B58 sounded amazing when he needed to give it the beans.

I'm so jealous of that patrol. Makes me get the feel down low...

How many amps do you need to push through the reducer?
Hahaha. I don’t blame you, I’ve been drooling at the mouth since there were legal to import, but didn’t want to pay the crazy $20k+ price everything costs the second they are able to be imported.

I’m going to run a 30a circuit, which should be enough for the stereo, and aux gauges once I add boost.

You could try something like this. If it ever fails, it should jut cut power to the output side.

Good call.

The main issue is the factory box is a switched and constant supply to the whole dash, so I'd have to wire up a 24v switched, etc. I will do it if the box ever fails, but for now it works for everything but the radio. I will be running something exactly like your link to power the radio and aux fuse block for later modifications.

If you need switched and constant, just get two of them. Use one for constant and one for switched. Easy.
