I am sorry if this has been discussed a million times. I can't find it. I can find some stuff here and there and nothing pertaining to my individual need (and let's face it, that's what's really important here ) I am wondering if there is a way to have my off-road lights hooked up to the switch like normal. Flip the switch on and off-road lights come on flip it all and they come off. Regardless of any other lights being on or in high. I can only find threads on less reputable forums from people who live in such fear, that they want fancy second switches that toggle the ability of the original switch and etc. I just want the dang switch to work like an on off switch just like my regular headlight switch. Anyone able to help? It seems like I read a couple of places referring to a "BCM" or something that requires people to run a bunch of relays or something?

The BCM is the body control module, or the computer that controls all of the functions of the car not related to engine management (ECM) or safety (ABS computer, SRS computer). The switch is not directly connected to the lights. When you push the OR light switch, you're telling the computer to turn on the lights. The computer then checks to see if the high beams are on and the covers removed. The covers have magnets on them that tell the BCM if they are in place so you don't melt them). So if the computer notes both of those prerequisites have been met, it will turn on the lights. If you then turn the high beams off, when you turn them back on, you have turn on the OR lights again, which I understand is annoying. It bothers me as well, but not to the point that I'm willing to run a series of jumpers and relays to fool the computer into thinking the high beams are on when they aren't. But, those circuits have been done time and time again, and I know the knowledge is out there. I'll see what I can find.

The reason for all this is that most states won't allow you to A) have more than four forward facing illuminating lights on at the same time while on public roads, or B) have forward facing illuminating lights more than 48" from ground level on while on public roads. Check out http://www.liftlaws.com/index.htm for info on what is legal in Mississippi (or elsewhere in the US).

You can use a latching relay to accomplish the task, just use your existing switch and wire it to the latching relay. Then the relay can power the lights themselves or send the signal to the IPDM to keep the lights on.
