Well let's see, goneMOAB officially starts in 97 days (from today). Wooo! I know I have quite a few things to do to prepare for it. Just thought I'd see what everyone else has planned to do to their X before the festivities and fun times start!

Mel's To-do:
  • Replace brakes/rotors
  • Fab up T-case skid
  • fab up engine skid
  • fab up transmission skid
  • flush fluids
  • Make sure alternator wont die on me....
  • finish rear diff breather mod

Ok, that's all I could think of off the top of my head.
Post up!

If manual, check clutch and clutch fluid, rotate your tires, in fact, if you've got a tire shop that'll play nicely, have them unmount and re-mount the tires after cleaning the beads on both tires and wheels, to ensure no potential dirt/mud/crap has gotten in there.

check/replace fuel pump/filter...

get that license plate mount settled, and once you do, get the light installed so you don't get ticketed on the drive down.

Agreed with above, just SAS it.

In all seriousness, don't forget to bring plenty of fluids for the X and yourself as I hear the MOAB can be harsh outside.

I'm guessing yours is a first gen? If so, I would recommend the gas tank skids, and spare gas tanks also too.

Don't forget, you'll need some type of roof carrier to haul your stuff that you don't want inside your X aka gas containers.

SAVE MONEY!

But really: order/install Shrock rad skid, order/install BTF diff cover, borrow Deadpilot's trans/t-case/gas tank skids and his sliders...

That's pretty much it, stealth the rims so I look good in pictures! IF i have extra money I want to get my KC daylighters put on my xoskel cage sitting in my garage, but I doubt that will happen...

I'm right there with ya man, think the roof lights are going to have to wait, but id like to stealth my rims if i have time. and
to add to it I need to :
get my cb antenna mounted
Run the cb antenna coax
Wire the cb to power.
Oil Change
Rotate the tires - This is where the stealthy may occur?
60K miles service :( -- bye bye large chunk of cash
meet up with marcin and get the arb mounted -- this may occur in moab
Probably not a bad idea to do the breath diff mod
hmmm... im sure theres more

There's not too much that can jump up and bite in Moab so if some of y'all don't get around to armoring up the bottom, you won't be in dire conditions. I only hit my skid once the last time I went and that was because I decided to take a really bad line. Now I'm not saying forgo all the skids, but don't worry if you're not covered fore to aft -- especially on the Easy trails. Radiator and engine skid will suffice if that's all you have on right now.

I do recommend sliders though, highly recommend them. I banged my NXRocks sliders around a lot.

Make sure your CB works well. Or at least make sure you're on the right channel that day. Oops.

If you're a Gen 2 person, a spare ABS line wouldn't hurt as there's always at least one snapped one -- or learn how to fix one using speaker wire.

If you're a manual driver, adjust your parking brake if it feels loose. That can make some obstacles a lot easier than having to worry about slipping cause it's not holding.

Just make sure your ride is in great operating condition. Think about it, you have to trek there, wheel for a week, then trek back home. You don't want small little things to ruin your trip. So whatever makes sense to you to do -- fluids, brakes, tires.

There's auto parts stores in town as well as tire stores. Moab4x4 Outpost is a pretty solid off road shop and I recommend them because they helped me out, gratis, the first year I went so I could get on the trails.

Oh, and if you like to drink (not in an alcoholic sort of way) bring plenty of beer. Utah alcohol laws suck. After a long on the trails, everyone pretty much collects in either the condos or campgrounds and have a few beers to unwind. So bring the good stuff and share. Caveat, don't bring too much that if you get pulled over, you'd be in deep poo poo.

Lessons learned from last year

Here are the things I've got to do prior to this year:

  • Change all the fluids, just because.
  • Acquire extra oil and other fluids
  • Rotate the tires
  • Check the filters and such like
  • Overhaul the cargo area. Sleeping platform, gear storage, etc. No, this isn't strictly necessary but I've got this thing about actually sleeping in the X.
  • Add-a-leaf or other suspension help for my sagging rear springs.

Now, a few things I learned:
  • Campsites are cool - actually a bit quieter than some of the condos. Since I like to get to bed a bit earlier and get up nice and early, they're a nice place to be.
  • It's easy to split a campsite with someone and not be in each other's way. Plenty of room.
  • If you've got a decent tent, you'll be just fine.
  • Air is available in front of the campsite. Since many of the trails are very close to Moab proper, you don't need to air up after every trail.
  • There's a Starbucks in the local grocery store.
  • The local grocery store is a great place to buy fresh food.
  • Bring the basic tools you'll need. Chances are if you break something difficult folks will have the necessary tools to help, but make sure you cover the basics.
  • There is a liquor store in Moab. I wouldn't call it great as far as selection of odd liquors goes, but it'll cover your basics.
  • You are very far above sea level. It's very dry. If you overdo the libations, you will suffer the next day. You'll also get drunk much quicker. This may make the concept of riding a dog very appealing in your Tuaca-impaired mind. This is not a Good Idea. Unless you want your kneecap to face the wrong direction.
  • Drink lots of water on the trails.

I'm also bringing my Weber charcoal grill. Mostly so I can grill up another bison steak.

Thanks, Peck, that was very helpful. I am newb to Moab this year. Been wishing and hoping for years to go and now I can finally do so. Woo! Extra ABS line, good idea! Had not thought of that one.

Still gonna try for all the skids, just because I feel they are a good idea in general, esp in the area I live in.

Joe- we can do lots of those things next week when I come down, inc bedlining wheels if you want.

Ive kinda hear the skids are kinda hit and miss you'll either need them or wont. But yes where you live yes it is a good idea.

Mel-

X1000 on the drinking plenty of water on the trails. I know you're just chillin' in your rig, but you can get dehydrated quickly. I ran through a lot of water while on Kokopelli Trail and Seven Mile Rim. It's dry, dry, dry, and dusty. Whatever you pack that day in water, wouldn't hurt to double it.

Also be prepared for temperature swings. At GONE9 we did Porcupine Rim for our first trail of the week.; I left the condo in shorts and t-shirt. Well when we got to the trail head and starting airing down...IT STARTED TO SNOW! Luckily I had a jacket in the truck. But by lunch time, it was back to being a normal May Utah day.

There are two supermarkets in town. One is the local smaller market and the other is City Market, a national chain (Kroger); the latter is way cheaper than the former. Plus at City Market you can grab some sandwiches or fried chicken for lunch if you didn't pack one.

Basic hand tools (and by basic I mean all the sockets, wrenches, ratchets, and duct tape that is needed to fix your truck) are great to have with you as well. I'm sure someone will bring a floor jack and jack stands with them as they're way better than a damn Hi-Lift when sitting on the flat concrete of the condos.

Basically my advice is this:
Don't over think things, know yours and your truck's limitations, listen to and follow your guides/spotters, and have fun.

Hmmm, so I looked into getting spare ABS line. Crap, goes for ~$200/set. Here's to hoping I don't need it. I did get a spare left side tie rod end (my driver's side is looking a bit worn). Packed some extra fluids that I may need and the X is almost ready. Wooo!

Well I can now add Wait for my credit card to arrive in the mail, Since american express emailed me today to tell me that someone had tried to spend $3k on it at Macys in Maryland. Thats a shiat ton of clothes. Got a pile of tools ready in the garage to toss in the rig, picked up some beverages and snack foods. Almost ready!

Looking good!
Is it sad I already started to pack up the X? Ha! Joe's skid and some spare parts I no longer need are in there now. As well as my yoga mat. Yep, I plan to do yoga while in Moab. :-D

Not sad at all. I just assembled and bolted down my sleeping platform/gear storage box set-up and loaded up the gear. I did this for a few reasons: It lets me check for things moving around, annoying squeaks, rattles, or things bouncing free. Plus I needed my wife to help me get the last bolt attached and since she's leaving Thursday morning, it's easier to do it now.

One week to go and it looks like ive got a problem with the spare tire carrier. Either the hinge broke or the bearing in it did. Not sure if i have time to cut it off and build a hinge like maxterra. Let the countdown begin. Cant work on it today or i get divorced.

Speaking from experiance, just take it off for the time being and strap it down in the back. You can re-do whatever you need to when you get back, and you wont have to worry about it while you are out there.

Yeah i think thats how its going to play out. If i dont have time to redo another hinge, ill drive it out there the way it is and pull the carrier and put the spare inside for wheeling.
