Hey guys, I'm looking to get opinions on this Xterra. I found it browsing through CL and I'm in the market for a new/better X. As most of you know, mine has been an absolute nightmare since the day I bought it. Instead of continued mechanic trips and costly repairs, I don't want to keep this one any longer than I have to. So I've been searching and searching and searching CL and forums trying to find me a new Xterra. Preferably one that is already built or one that has some decent mods on it. I

Here's the ad:
http://brownsville.craigslist.org/cto/5382345235.html

It's a 2006 2wd S converted to 4x4 OR edition. It has 78k miles on it and says that the engine/tranny/4wd have 26k miles. As soon as I see it, I recognize that everything on this X is made by Calmini and that the tag he has displayed on it says Calmini. I was curious about all the Calmini stuff and the tag and asked him if he bought it from them or what the deal was. I also asked him about the engine/tranny/4wd only having 26k miles on it. He gave me some info and says he's not sure why the engine/tranny were replaced. I called Calmini and spoke w/ Steve and he confirmed that it was their vehicle and it was his personal X. He says they got it as a theft recovery. They added their 5" Suspension Package, Front winch bumper, rock sliders, rear tire bumper carrier and roof rack. All were brand new when they put them on about 2 years ago. I checked the VIN# and it says its a 2wd S model but he claimed it as an Off Road edition. According to Calmini, they converted it over to an OR Edition from a vehicle they had at their shop. So they converted it to 4x4 used all the parts of an OR edition. They changed out the gauge cluster, factory switches, steering wheel, transfer case, axles and everything. The seller seems to think that the engine/tranny were replaced... Calmini says they never replaced then engine and the seller says he didn't replace the engine so I think he may be confused that the 4wd components have 26k miles on it and not the engine/tranny because he bought it from Calmini and it hasn't exchanged hands with anyone else. I asked about SMOD and he says that Calmini fixed that when they did the engine/tranny swap. Now, I imagine Calmini would have fixed that because its a pretty well known problem. Calmini also said the seller (confirmed by name) that he purchased it on eBay for around $14k. The seller claims that the wheels are actual beadlock wheels so when I called Calmini and asked, he says that they could be but they weren't sure. He can't remember if they ordered true beadlocks or simulated ones. The seller also claims he's never gone off road with it and from the pictures, it looks like he's truthful. I don't see any damage or scrapes or anything from what I can see.

I asked him if it has any squeaks or rattles that need to be addressed and he told me....
"Two quirks:
Front left Calmini arm has squeak and I treat it with graphite lube every so often.
Rear arm holding the tire on the back of the vehicle gets graphite lube to quiet it down. Just because it is so heavy. Calmini built it with strength in mind."

He also states that "the right two EGR valves should be replaced.
And the right passenger seat belt sensor that has been troubleshot a lot without replacing the entire brain to the seatbelt/airbag system."

I found that odd since I've been told our 2nd Gen's don't have EGR valves so I asked him what code its throwing and he says he will try and find out for me. He says he's 50/50 on repairing it but if I buy it, he will be repairing it.

He wants $13,500 which I too much IMO. KBB shows it in excellent condition for $9k. I told him $11k would be my offer. I think the 9k KBB value and all the add-on's its at least worth close to that. So what I'm wanting from you guys is y'all's opinion on it. The reason I come here with all this info is that I value the opinions/knowledge of the people in this forum. Overall, I think its a decent X and would be a good buy. I live 8 hours away from him so I can't exactly just go test drive it yet so I'm trying to gather as much info and help I can get before I pull the trigger.

Other than the Calmini drop bracket lift, it looks pretty sorted. Personally, id be wary of any truck with that much wrench time just because you don't really know own the quality and skill of the person turning those wrenches.
