Planning weekend trips

I am in the process of making plans for possible weekend wheeling trips. I am wondering what would be some close places to go that are around Ohio? the places would have to have camping and allow pets. I have been looking on line and most of what comes up are off road parks.

It's tough in the midwest, man. Honestly most of mine that are Michigan-based end up somewhere around the Great Lakes. I've been to a few nice places in PA and NY up along Erie and Ontario, I'll see if I can find where they were. Other than that, try going a little south to Kentucky or east to West Virginia. I found a cool place in the Monongahela national forest (http://www.fs.usda.gov/mnf/) in West Virginia, there are tons of trails in there.

My wife was just saying she wanted to take a trip to Michigan. She found a place where we can rent a yurt on the lake.

I will look into Kentucky and Virginia also. I forget what the place is in Pennsylvania but I would also like to visit there also.

Honestly, I can't recommend Michigan enough. It has everything. The only downside is that all the good spots are a good distance away, which is both good and bad. It sucks to have to drive 6-10 hours, but it keeps the tourists out because it takes dedication to get there!

West Virgina and Pennsylvania were both really great, too. I love the hills and mountains.

One place in Michigan I have on my list is Drummond Island. That would be quite a haul for you but may be worth it on a long weekend. I think the wife and I are trying to schedule a trip next summer.

Thanks for the suggestions everone. I will be checking into them. I know I will be going to tar hollow state Park in ohio a few times camping and wheeling down there. Also some of the guys from one of the groups I'm in is having a benefit down, i think it's flagpole Virginia this spring. I am trying to expand my range because ohio is limited on places to wheel.

The Silver Lake sand dunes in Mears, MI is a nice place to visit. You'd need a dune flag for your rig and an ORV sticker (both sold at local shops) but a lot of the campgrounds are nice. Silver Lake Resort and Campground was an excellent place to stay the last time we visited (avoid Jellystone!).

Since you mentioned Kentucky, you have two great options.

One is Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area which features Turkey Bay Off-Highway Vehicle park (ratings are easiest Yellow Diamond to not 4x4 friendly Blue Diamond) and primitive camp grounds. My favorite spot was Redd Hallow.

Another option is Mammoth Cave National Park. I wasnt able to take a trip there but it has the same features as LBL.

Picture Rocks national lake shore is a location that is hard to beat. The silver Lake basin up in the UP is also nice and secluded. Both will be more overlanding and two tracks than wheeling park style wheeling.

Both will be a haul for you to get there but would be well worth the effort.

Thanks for this recommendation. I talked to my wife and this is definitely on the list of places to visit this summer.

What part of Ohio are you in? I'm from Marietta.
