Okay, here we go... since 07 I've been driving a Toyota FJ Cruiser, tons of mod's over the years, 3" lift-285-70-17 BFG MT's, even sprayed the entire truck with Line X. + a huge list of other things. Well, now has 225,000+ miles with a bad rapping noise from one of the timing chains/belts, anyway, it's been a great run with the FJ & I need a more reliable ( FJ will blow up eventually), so I've been looking around for something that will fit the bill so to speak. Found a 2011 Pro X4 with under 100,000 on it for around 7500. My wife has leased a 2011&2012 Xterra I think was the years . The one I'm looking at seems solid, suspension is original factory (that will change very quickly), but the rest of the truck looks like new. Can anyone give me an idea what I should be looking for as far as problems that might be under the surface? Loved the information I got from the FJ forums & hope this is just as good. Let you know how the sale goes in a few days

    Welcome to XN!

You're in luck. By 11 they had sorted out the issues that the 2nd gen had. I don't know of anything other than regular maintenance to be on the look out for.

On that note, a quick thing about maintainance. On a Nissan the regular maintenance intervals are crucial. Especially once you pass 150k. Keep doing those things and the truck will literally last forever.

I hear you on the regular maintenance, did not keep up on my FJ & that's why I'm in the position I'm currently in. All good, looking forward to the change to the Xterra, it was time to move on. Currently reading through the suspension threads as that's & bigger tires are first on the list. Oh well... here we go again

Check the rear axle vent breather. Make sure the rear wheel seals aren't leaking. You're good on the timing chain and SMOD issues though. That was sorted.

There have been a few instances of the 11-13 breaking the flange off the exhaust manifolds but it's super rare and a pretty easy fix if it does happen.

I think you'll be incredibly happy though. The improvement in visibility alone would make it worth the swap for me!

Yep, the FJ's B pillers are quite thick. & take getting used to. If your not a fan of reversing using mirrors only the FJ isn't for you. My wife just corrected me, she had 2007 & 2010 Xterra lease on both, now in a 2018 Marono. They were okay I guess, didn't drive them much & couldn't mod them due to lease, all good now , clean slate with the 4X

It's an awesome platform. Titan swapped suspension is equal to a Yota Iron Stage 4 for 1/3rd the price. Plus it uses a lot of factory Titan parts that you can get anywhere.

Good to have you. Enjoy the X.

As the others have said, the 2011 is arguably the best year for issues. However, I did have the timing chain guide issue raise it's ugly head at me at about 106,000 miles. To this day, I'm the only known 2011 to have had it done (known to these groups anyway).

I replied in your other thread... my advice is search long and hard, think about what you really want from this thing, and buy it all once. You'll NEVER be sorry for spending the coin.... I've redone my suspension 3X's and I never went cheap, but I could have saved myself a shiat ton of money if I'd just sucked it up and done it the first time.

Doing stuff more than once is the worst. That's why I still have stock UCAs. No point in changing them until it goes Titan.

It's almost a running joke the 2011 is the best year. It was in production long enough to get all the major bugs sorted out, but before they moved production from TN to GA when the quality got dicey until they got in the groove at the new assembly line.

I see a lot of them but never been around FJ's at all. I always was more fond of 4runners. The hardware of an FJ impresses me, but the body, ugh. I never could get past the fact they look like a cheezy hot wheels toy.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Xterra, but I'd go for a Toyota any day. I currently have a 3rd Gen 4runner and if the right one popped up I'd likely have a Land Cruiser of some flavor (Probably 100 series) in a minute. Nissan quality is good, but Toyota quality is excellent especially around the early 2000's.

    Truth.

I'm about to redo mine the third time (just bought an m205 - the beginning of an expensive Titan swap journey. . . ). Started with a cheap spacer + AAL, then went Ext Radflos + Alcans. Really should have just saved up and did it right the first time - oh well. ;)
