Pathfinder Rear Disc Brake Swap

Ya SRStaff helped with mine. Had the same issue with axle studs but like he said i just ordered some 30-40mm grade 10.9 hex nuts and the fir perfect. The hex head fits right against the axle as well so you don't have to fit a wrench in the back. I haven't hooked up the parking brake yet. Thinking im going to get a universal console brake pull and run it straight back to the stock hookup for the pathy discs as all my old cables are rotted and worthless. This can all be done without the special bearing press but it is a beotch! On top of that if it isn't handy to get its about $1000 to buy. No thats not a typo. We'll see if mine will hold together. Totally worth it though. I'd say around a 25% increase in stopping power.

It's definitely been a fun project. Unfortunately, I messed up. When I went to replace the studs with the longer ones I had to kind of pop the axle out of the bearing a little to get the clearance. And when I put it all back together the bearing feels it's binding. So I'm going to have to pull the whole thing again and see what's up.

And yeah, I hear you on the price for the tool. That's what I found online also. And now that I've used it it's not worth that kind of money so I'm glad I was able to borrow it.

Once the holidays are over I'll jump back in and get this finished up.

Just out of curiosity would a pathy complete rear end swap into an xterra.

The axle I believe is slightly more narrow and also 31 spline axles instead of 33 so not necessarily an upgrade by any means.

This. 3" narrower, 31 spline, smaller axle shafts. The only cool part would be the 4 link w/coils.

There haven't been. I've been super broke and have more parts to buy. Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll get some traction.

I hear yah on the broke part. Lol

I want to do this brake swap mod too but need the extra funds. Mine got all zapped by the SAS. Need to recoup from it still.

Look forward to see more progress.

OK. Progress report. I ordered all the new parts I need for both axle shafts. Now I'm on the hunt for the shaft for the other side. It's time to kick this pig!

So, as most of you know, I sold my truck. So naturally, these will still be sitting in the garage. Which means they need to go to. I'll be posting a for sale thread this weekend with all the details once I get the other side built and get more pictures.

Yeah. Basic rundown is as follows.

Installation is pretty straight forward.

Disconnect parking brake cables from your truck
Disconnect hard brake line from the back of the drum
Pull ABS sensors from axle
Remove 4 retaining nuts from the axle shaft
Pull the axle shaft out of the truck
Replace inner seal
Slide disc brake axle shaft in
Secure with 4 nuts
Reconnect abs sensor
Reattach parking brake cable
Gently re-bend hard line to go into soft line and tighten.

Repeat on both sides
Bleed and enjoy.

The one thing I can't account for is if the flare nut on the hard line is the same size/pitch/flare as the pathfinder soft line. I have the original Pathy flare nuts from the hard lines I cut off the junk yard truck, so if necessary you could cut the Xterra flare nuts off install these and reflare the line and you'd be good.

Updated the final build post of the thread. These axle shafts are now complete and ready to be installed. This was a whole lot of fun to build. It was costly in parts and time for sure. And I hope whoever they go to takes really good pictures of the install so that I can see how it all turns out.

Resurrecting this thread, but why cant 2wd WD22 axles be used? Are the bearing cups different?
This is just a guess, but if I remember by schematics and p/ns correctly, If it's a v6 2wd, should work fine. It's still an h233b. If it's a 4cyl, the rear end is completely different.
