p0505 - idle air control valve. replace before shorts out your ecm

After my previous post, where Bushnut helped me figure out what was causing my misfire was just a thick layer of oxide on my distributor cap, I'm now dealing with p0505.

I haven't had the car run without a misfire since rebuilding the top end, I attributed the idle issue to the misfire, because it was so pronounced. I've spent the rest of the day driving without incident, but racking my brain over the p0505. I haven't seen much on xterras in particular, but for for other nissans, when the IACV fails, its from coolant shorting out the motor, which then shorts the ECM.

hoping I caught this in time, and maybe I can save someone else a few hundred bucks.

just an update. p0505 was an easy fix. with the intake off, just replaced the broken gasket. used red rtv. Unfortunately once i was done, i found out my kit that came with the head gasket had a replacement. oh well, now I have extras.

inside the IACV i found water. sprayed some brake clean, some electrical parts cleaner, let it air dry, blew it out. tested it with battery voltage to make sure the valve still worked. put it back together. no codes since.

even though IACV seemed fine on paper, and the code went away. I had to replace it to fix my rough idle that persisted...

Thanks for finishing the thread. I hate it when when I’m researching an issue and no one lets you know that they figured it out and fixed it. They just always leave you hanging.

^^^ this 100%. you never know whos just lurking and reading, how many years down the road. Just want it out there so it maybe saves someone the headache.

Yeah I'm happy too because I'm the newb who just happened to get the full story, just in case I need it. Thanks!
