Overland trails in or near Missouri?

So some of my friends and I are wanting to do an overland camping adventure, and are trying to find a good trail to go on. Basically we are just wanting to wheel on the trail for a couple of days, and maybe do like some hiking or something. We live pretty much right in the center of the state of Missouri, and are wanting to try and find a trail in our state or within a reasonable distance. Like maybe a 200 mile radius.

We are looking for a trail that is not to extreme, for the vehicles we have. I have a 2012 Xterra pro-4x with some mods, but no suspension mods. My friend has a Toyota FJ, and another friend has a Ford F-250.

I have a I heard about a trail down in Arkansas called the Ozark Overland Trail, however it kind of looked a little extreme because of all the water crossings, and I read on a forum that a snorkel is almost a necessity to have on the trail, which none of us have.

However, if anyone has any advice of a good place to go, it would be great!

If you want to make it a true adventure. Pickup some paper maps of the your state and the states around you. And start looking for all the dirt roads. Start marking them and then connect the dots with paved roads and just go.

Look up the Trans American Trail (TAT). It is all dirt and crosses almost the entire country. Easily doable with stock trucks from what I have read.

The TAT, starts in TN, goes through AR, Then into Ok. Might be a good choice. There are gps or roll charts that are sold. You can buy all of the states or just each state. the total cost is the same.

Or if you want to head north you can do the TWAT (trans Wisconsin adventure trail) there are free GPX files online for the mapping of it. With the travel there and back probably be a week for you.

Besides this your best bet is get on some Arkansas forums for offroading and overlanding and find what the driest time is for the Ark overland trail or maybe there are some other trails that are unknown. Or you could possibly just skip over those difficult parts and run the rest. Part of overlanding is going down a trail and if you can't go forward go back and figure out a way around it. Make sure you have good maps for the area's you will be headed.

Here is a map of what the TN, Ark, and OK portion of the TAT look like. Sorry I will not provide more details on the specific route as a guy put it together and is selling them to keep the info up to date and create more treks. He also has on in Mississippi that is a 2 day journey if you want to travel that far.
