Overhead Console/Map Lights Mounting?

I want to add the factory overhead map lights to my Xterra. I've found a couple fixtures used fairly cheap, I just can't tell from pictures how it mounts to the roof/headliner. Anyone have one they've taken apart?

Do you not have anything up there above the mirror?

It's held in place by these metal clips that snap into the roof. It's just a press fit. I can't imagine that there are any trucks out there without the notches, as it would require a new piece of sheet metal.

You just have to cut a hole in the headliner that is just smaller than the assembly.

As far as power, the map lights are always hot. So you'll just have to get wite up one of the A-pillars. Who knows, having no map light seems rare. You might already have the wiring up there.

That's wicked bizare. Do you know if the headliner is factory? Maybe somebody had it redone and eliminated the lights?

At any rate, I'm sure the notches are there to hold the light. It's just a matter of cutting the right size hole.

I agree. The cut out in the sheet metal should still be there under the headliner, just cut it and put it in.

If you're going for the factory piece you may have to run your own wires, but who knows.....maybe they ran the wires just because its easier to do that than make sure which onces need it and which dont at that stage of production.

I'm prepared to do some wiring. I'll probably snatch one on ebay and hope for the best when I start cutting the headliner. Anyone care to measure how far back from the windshield the front of their light fixture is?

If nobody answers it by the next time I head out there I'll check for you.....I've been going up and down the stairs all day and just want to sit for awhile. The fixture itself is probably around an inch and the hole that it snaps into is like maybe 2 inches, but thats just guessing.

But if you mean the display side.....I have no clue off hand.

PICTURES!!!!

The bracket that holds the light is attached to the roof itself.

The opening is 6 3/4" across and 3" front to back.

And a crappy pic showing about where it should be located

I wish I had that one. All I have is the lights. I imagine there is extra wiring for the sensors.

I have that one. There are two plugs I believe, one for the compass/temp and the other for the lights. I haven't had mine down in a couple of years though.

All you people with your compass / temp gauge make me sick!

This whole time (even with your signature) I thought we had identical trucks, sans color...but no, you have an XE, not an SE.

Those compasses came on the SC/SE trucks from 02-04. Might have been on the earlier SEs but I don't think they were.

Observational skills! Yeah. But thankfully, it's an XE that was optioned to the hilt.

It looks like the plug for the temp and compass does have quite a few wires running to it.

The little plug near the windshield is for the fancy stuff, while the larger one in the middle is for the light. Where I'm going is if you get the compass version you linked, the lights will still work, just without the fancy bits.

Think I'm just gonna find one of the non fancy ones with just lights. Guessing I'll have to buy a bracket, too, which is almost $30 from Courtesy Nissan. If there aren't any wires up there I'll just tap into the existing dome light wires, it'll all be LED, anyway.

Went to a pull a part and actually found an Xterra!
Snagged map nights and dash bezel. Also got the overhead console from a Tahoe. If I can make it fit I'll have a homelink garage door opener, storage and map lights and I'll sell the map lights for the X if anyone would want them.

Can anyone tell me how to get the map light stuck again if the brackets are broken, because i'm having a hard time with it.
