Nylon fuel line - is this required or can I use rubber tubing

I am swapping the engine on my 2009 Xterra SE 6 cy 2WD auto. The fuel line that connected to the injection rail is rubber-coated stiff nylon. I need to replace this and re-attach it to the nipples. The stiff nylon is really hard to work with. Can I just use a heavy rubber tube and a c-clamp on the nipples instead? That seems to be the way it used to be done. Thanks for the help! See photo for the tube and fittings in question.

No. You need petroleum resistant tubing. Lines that carry fuel, brake fluid, things of that nature have to be specifically rated for it.

Ok. Can someone point me to how to attach the nylon fuel line tubing back onto the nipples? I am bit of a noobie and have not worked with this type of stiff tubing before. I understand there is some sort of tool but I am not sure where to look. Using a heat gun is not working it just slags the tubing.

Alternately can I just join it to the nipples with a section of rubber tube with clamps on each side. The factory-installed fuel line was like surgically melted onto the nipples I don't think I can replicate that. I would use nylon tube for the line itself, and just join the nylon to the nipple connections via a clamped hose bridge.
