Looking good! Cannot wait to see it. Between the two of us, we'll have about 320,000mi to chat about. Wooo for high mileage stormtroopers who are still full of BA-ery :)

Hopefully the bumper combined with the latch and lock we machined will prevent that... Ill post better pics later. This was when we finished in the wee hours.

Oooo nice! You know, I wish I could have a basket on my X, but I have yet to find one that I can connect/haul my kayak on. Alas. :-( Cannot wait to see this one tho!

As long as you keep your crossbars you should be able to haul a kayak. I'll throw my makos up on the bars when I get back frOm Moab, I'm hoping it woRks...

Mako saddles? What kind of boat(s) do you have? I have a few whitewater boats but all of my stuff is several years old... after I left REI to go back to school, I found that I missed the insane employee discounts.

What do you not like about the swing away? I would love to make one, but I have no resources at my disposal in order to create anything..

Hinge I used (7" barrel hinge with a 3/4" pin) isn't working out. There's a little slop in it, which means the mount can flex and smack the hatch/rear window, and/or generate enough force to rip something out. Still fiddling with it, but at this point I'm going to probably have to cut off the hinge and replace with something that's at least an inch in diameter for the pivot point, and I need to rethink the way I attached the open side of the swing to eliminate any movement. It was a good first try, but mistakes were made....

Wait, is there kayaking in Moab?

Hmmm, not that I know of. I just use mine fairly frequently and have noticed a lot of the aftermarket roof carriers do not have accessibility to attach my kayak carrier system on them. Hence why I never bothered to get/make one.

Regardless, they look cool on an X and I'm looking forward to seeing yours on there.

Sometimes i dont even bother with the makos and just tied it down over surfboard crossbar pads

I still have three different sets of Yakima/Thule boat carriers and none of them work well for just one or two boats at a time. The only one I use now is the Yakima one that allows the rack to carry 4-6 boats at a time when stacked on their sides. All of the other carriers have been collecting dust for several years; the bare crossbars work so well it's hard to justify messing with the attachments.

Yeah the makos allow me to carry exactly one kayak at a time with the stock crossbars. Plus, the way they're designed u get annoying wind noise from the straps. The pads on the crossbars are easier and quieter. Maybe not the best for my boat, but it's a hardy POS so whatever...

That's probably why I don't care for the saddles much. All of my boats are made to bounce off of rocks and logs so a bare crossbar isn't much of an issue. If I had a nice composite touring boat I would probably feel differently. BTW, I've never come across a POS Perception before; even their low end boats are well designed. For multi-day trips, I've often chosen "cheapo" perception rec boats over some really nice touring boats because they are easier to maneuver on rivers and easier to load gear into as well.
