Nissan's iPod Interface cable

Do any of you 2nd Genners have the iPod cable that connects to the factory stereo? Is it as bad an interface as I've heard it is?

I ask, because it's time I retired my 30gb Zune, and since I now have an iPhone and I'm using iTunes, I can't see any reason to continue using the Zune software in addition to iTunes. and since all my CDs were stolen a couple of years ago, I've moved to an all-digital library. Trouble is, my library is about 90GB, and I'm tired of moving music around whenever I want a particular album, instead of just having all my music with me at all times. So I'm going to buy a iPod, finally.

My question is this: Do I also spend the money on a new head unit with built in iPod connectivity, or is the interface cable for the factory stereo good enough? Keep in mind, I would also be spending money on steering wheel control adapter, SiriusXM tuner, and Bluetooth (if the stereo I decide on doesn't have it built in), so it's not just a cost of new head unit vs. cost of iPod cable.

Basically a long winded explanation to solicit your opinions on the iPod cable for the factory stereos.

I don't mind a PITA installation, if the end result is worth it. I just put a Parrot in my dad's Sierra last week, and it was a giant pain, but the end result was totally worth it for him, and of course, I got paid. But, if the interface is going to be as annoyingly difficult to use as I've heard, then I might as well do a full on PITA installation of a whole new system. I just wasn't looking to spend that much.

Dude I've got a pioneer bt920 i got off amazon for like 480 they had a monster sale. The iPod interface on it is awesome, I can Watch the videos on my iPod or run pandora on my iPhone even thru the blue tooth. It's sweet. I'd say get one of those that was made to interface with an iPod/iPhone and you'll love it

How much extra for satellite radio and steering wheel controls? I already have those and they're the reason I didn't swap out the RF stereo when I first got the truck.

J, I probably would not do the OE interface system either, I just bought a new head unit for my wifes 2nd gen at Fry's that had the Ipod hook up through the glove box, allthough she did not have the Rockford system. Still I did a double din clarion unit and it sounds and looks very clean and was like about $350.00 installed. It is just a basic head with nothing special but plays music and that was all she was worried about.

Well, the one thing I don't have to pay for is installation. I can definitely do that myself. I just didn't really want to spend too much money on top of the money for an iPod.

yeah the install is a piece of cake, hardest part of mine was installing the gps antenna, if i had xm that probably wouldn't have been far behind

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get a new stereo. I really like the Pioneer AppRadio, but I hate that it only has one pair of RCA outputs, and no SiriusXM support, though I can do that through my phone as long as I have a good signal. Still open to other options... but it's a ways down on my list, plus my wife is between jobs at the moment, so my mod budget is non-existent at the moment.

I was really hoping to hear the opinions of someone who'd actually used the Nissan iPod cable, but I guess no one has one.

Well I have only sold a couple of those things since they have been out but no one has complained that im aware of. If you want to keep the factory unit then that is your only option...I would have no doubt that it is made by apple ( it just doesn't tell us ) for Nissan vehicles so im sure it will work well.

Just picked up my X last week - has the iPod interface. It isn't the greatest, most user friendly interface, but for me it works. I set it on shuffle, and let the music play. If you're looking to browse through the songs - forget about it - horrible for that.

Thanks. That's exactly the type of info I was looking for. I think I'm going to replace the stereo instead.

I have the iPod interface in mine, I plugged my iPod in once and tried to navigate it as I can't stand shuffle, and I switched back to a CD within 2 minutes it was so horrible. I just use my phone through the aux input and I put a dock for my phone where the navigation would normally go. So much easier.

The biggest complaint that I have is that it doesn't charge the Ipod.

There is an adapter you need to insert at the end between your ipod and the cable, it is made by Scoche. Your local Nissan dealer parts guy should be able to help you out with this...Let me know if he doesn't.

Edit note: 1st time: copied wrong link. 2nd time: The link doesn't exist anymore...changed my response also.

I have never used it for 1reason, it will not charge the iPod or iPhone. Real bummer because I had considered buying an older 120 g iPod just to keep in the x

My 2013 will charge my iPhone, iPad, or mini, and plays music from any of those as desired. No mus no fuss.

The 2013 has an all new available head unit with nav and ipod connectivity.
When I originally posted I still had my '08 and was asking about the ipod interface available for the '05-'12 models.

http://youtu.be/0d6WKbAZC4A my old iPhone and ipod would actully pop up a message saying charging was not supported, this video is with my iPad 3, I have a 12 pro4 x with the rockfordfosgate, and it's always done this, since it had 3 miles on it. Dad called nissan on it when I figured this out and they told him it was normal

If you replace the head unit check out pioneer avh4000nex. A bit pricey but an update will allow car play so the nav / music will come from your phone. They also dropped icloud storage cost a lot so you could store the music physically/ in the cloud and stream it on the go. I'll be installing one of these soon.
