Yesterday we made the pilgrimage to my mom's family reunion at ceta canyon outside of Canyon, TX. We have several route options for this trip and decided to take the route less traveled but still time efficient since we were only going for the day. This route took us from Altus to Memphis, then to Silverton on to Tulia through Happy before we exited on to a farm to market road that would lead us to the canyon where zero cell service was available.

Along the way we drove through Caprock Canyons State Park and some amazing farm and ranch land.

We were in a hurry because we left at 730 and this is a 3 hour trip without stopping. We don't manage many trips without stopping. Since we were going to be visiting family and then leaving that evening we didn't stop at nearly the places we wanted to. We'll definitely be taking this route again even if it's just to visit the canyon. There was a trail leading off to who knows where that I'm almost positive said no vehicles without 4 wheel drive recommended, I will new going back for that trail.

We ended up taking a less eventful route home since it was late and we were exhausted so no pics or report from that.

Thanks man, I wish I would have had more time to stop and take good pictures. Also, there were several really cool historical markers on this highway that we didn't get to stop for. I think the highway was part of the high plains trail or something. I'm going to research it a little more.

O__O

That looks awesome. If I saw that sign, I'd be all about it.

If it weren't for not seeing my cousins and ain't and uncle for three years I would have been all over it!

I also have a couple of local lakes and tons of backroads I need to take/see that will make this thread. Unfortunately I don't have a unlimited gas card or this would be an every weekend deal. I wanted to make it out to the wildlife refuge but plans and lack of money have kept us busy/at home. What a contradiction lol.

It's been a while since I've been on any adventures per say. We had my mom in town for help with Con-Solo during our ultrasound appointment so we decided that we needed to visit Meers for a kick ass burger and even better cobbler and home made ice cream.

Meers is a one intersection town past the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge outside of Lawton, OK. The restaurant only accepts cash and local checks because they are stubborn like that, I'm pretty sure they just got air conditioning in the past couple of years. This place has been featured on the food network because they raise their own long horn cattle for the beef. It's very lean and pretty tasty, but the burger isn't why I go. I go for the cobbler and homemade ice cream, we apparently went when they needed to use the rest of their batch because I've never been served as big a serving as this trip. They also serve a beer they have brewed just for them but I am consistently driving on these trips so I can't say if it's any good.

My phone died so I didn't get pics of my burger or cobbler but you can probably see several pictures people have posted if you search. Here are a few pictures from the trip.

I had to just find the general area on the highway and then use that little person on Google to pull along til I found the right spot. If you get crazy you could drive out there and check out the canyon too. We plan on doing that someday.

well let me know when you decide to get crazy and i may decide to get crazy as well

I took my family on vacation to Red River, NM on a camping trip. After an extra long day of traveling and about two hours of sleep on Sunday night while camping with a 2 year old and 4 month old we decided to get a cabin to make sure our trip was memorable for the right reasons. We found a cozy little cabin that barely fit a queen bed and had a decent sized bathroom with a shower. The cabin was a short walk to the river where there was a nice little swing and fire pit. I'm not going to narrate every picture but our trip was from Altus, OK to Red River, NM via Logan, NM (which was our meeting spot with my brother in-law and his family).

We bought XL cots to co-sleep with the kids and Becca had the remnants of the X-bed for her cot so hers was comfortable. I continuously rolled into my son on the other cot and he fought sleep all night long because the cold kept getting to him even though he refused to have even a light cover over his head to keep from breathing in such cold air. 2 hours of sleep that night.....

My brother in law has an outfitter tent. We had originally planned on sleeping in their tent with their stove to keep warm at night but there wasn't space at all.

After a little web searching and my son falling in the river in town I found our cozy little cabin.

My brother in law wanted to go to Cabresto Lake to go fish with his family and he thought it'd be a short little drive. Welllllll he didn't know a thing about how long it'd take to get there. We had intended on riding up there, having lunch, and then hanging out for a minute before going back to town to shop while they fished. We wasted an hour and a half driving up there....

We stopped and ate in Logan, NM at at place called the Annex. I had an AWESOME green chile smothered chicken fried steak. We hit the road again and took some truly desolate farmer market roads. FM Road 2013 to be exact.

The roads were so desolate that we didn't meet a single person the entire way. I drove the center line almost the entire time. The baby cried for at least 45 minutes off and on during the last leg of the trip from Logan to Friona so we had definitely pushed it with how long we were in the car. Happy 4th of July! USA! USA!

Great pics and it looks like a great trip, Mac. We'll be doing a NM run as well next week, but probably be a lot further south than your trip.

Wife and I buzzed thru northeast NM saturday evening, probably when you guys were traveling. There was a nasty storm passing your way, would have been south of the Raton/Clayton path - Hwy 87. Looks like you had a great time - aren't you a fan of the Creede, Co, area? We drove thru there earlier on saturday.

We traveled back from Red River Thursday and from Texas on Sunday so we missed all of the significant weather. I love Creede, one of my favorite places to visit. Sounds like you had a heck of a trip.

Yep, we had a great time as always - we love southwest Colorado. My wife's family has a nice place west of Gunnison (mainly for hunting and summer vacations - we honeymooned there 18 years ago). The place has been in the family for 100+ years - lots of relatives in the area too. Generally we always stop thru Ouray (if not stay there), and many times go thru Lake City - which means driving to or from Creede area. Honestly I don't know too much about Creede, I know the areas around it are beautiful, but the town looks kinda rough. What do you like about Creede? If I recall, you've been going out there with family for years...

I say Creede because it's the closest town to where we actually go. We actually stay up on the mountain along the trail from the Rio Grande reservoir to Silverton. We generally just fill up with gas and drop off our trash in Creede, my wife and I shopped a couple of the stores there last time we were there. We liked Lake City much much better for doing the tourist thing. There's also a great little town along the highway of the legends called Cuchara that we like. We stopped there for a couple hours and could see ourselves staying there sometime.

I still haven't been able to visit Gunnison but would love to get up to that direction. The Weminuche Wilderness is just a beautiful area, SW Colorado is awesome!

Well my brother in law invited me to go on his annual camping trip with his friends and it was definitely a good time. We planned on going to a lake near Questa, NM but the road wound up being too snowed over for even my truck to make it very far, much less the other two trucks with trailers.

Overlooking Questa

The road leading to our intended camping spot.

After we realized this wasn't going to work we had a guy with us who's brother had been to a unique place near Costilla, NM and we headed that way. We missed the initial turn and wound up in Colorado by accident. So I traveled in four states in one day and one of them was by accident.

Highway to Costilla and Colorado coincidentally.

My first accidental visit.

Finally arriving after a very long day of driving.

The river was frozen over the top in most places and it was difficult to get to a good fishing spot almost everywhere. I screwed up and didn't get any pictures of our camp but my brother in law has an awesome outfitter tent setup so we stayed dry and warm.

We ate like kings! The first night we had Posole, the second night we had bacon potatoes and 20oz rib eye steaks over the fire, and the last night we had something one of the guys had dubbed Chupacabra fajitas.

My brother in law and a friend are in this picture. It's like an outdoors where's Waldo.

Thanks for reading!

We had two guys catch a total of three fish and they didn't have many more bites than that. They threw one back.

I would love to come to a meet and greet in Abq but I had to have my gas financed for this trip haha. I looked to see if the times overlapped at all but wasn't that lucky.

After years of mediocre driving and flat highways the Xterra is finally slated to go back to where I originally envisioned it to go. Creede, Colorado.

I've been itching to go back for years and having kids and being relatively strapped for cash has held me back. This year was just too much, I've tortured myself with pictures of my last trip as my desktop background and screen saver at work for too long!!!

On my previous trips here I've always passed a sign labeled Lost Trail Ranch. I always assumed the cabins would be way out of my price range and to some extent I was right. However they do have a cabin called Little Dude that rents per week for a meager cost of $500. After visiting with my sister we have decided to split the cost of the trip and make our way to Colorado this September!

My parents, aunts and uncles, my cousins, and even some second and third cousins were invited on a trip here this August, and my sister and I never received an invite. We got the message and decided to go a few weeks later when the leaves should be changing color, so middle fingers to the people who made sure we didn't get invited with the family.

I'm finally going to take my Xterra up to Kite Lake like I have wanted to since the day I bought it. This trip the truck is equipped to handle the trail, and the argument from the wife that it may not be, last time I had stock everything but the Hefty bumper.

I'm going to put a link below for some pictures from a X owner who has taken his to Kite Lake, and a link for the cabin we'll be staying in. It's small but we'll take a cot for my 3 yr old and a pack and play for the 16mo old and my wife and I will split the full bed. My sister will use the twin bed as her husband will be deployed this fall, this trip should help her by making the time pass a little while he's gone and she hadn't been to Creede since she was a pre-teen.

http://www.lost-trail.com/rental-cabins

http://www.thenewx.org/#/forumsite/21065/topics/44487

My non-refundable deposit has been made on the cabin so I'm going! I'm also going to see if I can convince the wife to let me check out Engineers Pass and Cinnamon Pass.
