M416/M100 Military (Willys) Trailers

This past weekend, I went and visited a machine shop in the middle of nowhere Alabama. I spent a greater part of the day wandering between 10+ lathes, mills, and dozens of cars and such. Think of the places those picker shows would drool over. Anyway, near the end of my day, I spied a M416/100 trailer sitting out with a new-ish ball receiver. I asked the guy we had spent the day with what he knows about it, to which he replied it was just another hunk of metal on his land. He said he'd easily be willing to part with it, but neither of us could come up with a fair number.

If you don't know what they look like:

I know nothing about these and wasn't even considering it, but the potential was without a doubt there. This is a good guy and I didn't want to risk hurting our short relationship by low-balling with the reasonable amount of cash in my pocket. The condition is comparable to the picture above and it needs to be media blasted and recoated.

Can someone help me out with some info and maybe a value? I would use it for the next 2 years or so as a standard trailer (I move too much right now) and then go all expo on it. Its probably not going to move anytime soon, so I'm not in a rush to get a dollar amount to him.

750-1200 seems to be going rate for a decent condition 416. I would love to find one and build it up.

I dunno. I'm just going by craigslist prices in my area. Some are rust buckets that need a whole new tub...

I agree with Jeff the going rate out here is as low as 750 (good luck with that) and as high as 1500.
I picked one up a couple of years ago and have slowly been rebuilding it.

In that condition, they still go for $500+, because of the rarity. A recently as five-seven years ago that would have been a $250 trailer, but once the overlander guys started building adventure trailers on them, they all got bought up and they're really hard to find now. Hell, I'd offer $500, and if he has more than one, let me know. Alabama isn't that far from me!

I only recall seeing one. He did have one of the larger trailers though. I'm sorry, but I don't know the designation.

The larger trailers are probably M105A1's. Those are abundant, but a bit too big for towing behind an Xterra. Unless what you saw is something older, like an M116. I'd love one of those.

To the OP:

The trailer in your "example" photo is a Korean War era M100. The trailer in your cell phone photo is a Vietnam era M416. There are significant differences between the two.

The M416 pictured is probably worth about $500-700 if it is rough as you describe, but it is impossible to properly assess its condition from the photo. You could make a lowball offer, but the resurgence in popularity of these trailers has increased the going rate even for rust buckets.

As an example of what can be done with these 1/4 ton trailers, here is my restored '46 Bantam T3-C:
