I have been looking at an xterra 2007 off road owner says that he has done a compression test and that was in spec but also admits to burning 3 quarts of oil for every 4000 miles . I think he has a blow by problem ( rebuild ) what do you guys think ? its 170,000 miles for 6,000

I would do a compression test yourself or have a garage do it. My 07 with 214k uses about a 1/2 pint between 4500 mile oil changes.

It's common for a failing catalytic converter to clog the secondary cat and the pulsing of the cylinders mixed with the EGR function of the exhaust cam (it's theorized amongst enthusiasts) to draw the ceramic material from the converter into the cylinders and destroy the rings and cylinder walls.

Gen 1 is generally / mechanically more durable. With the downside of needing a timing belt every 100k. It's also way underpowered for its size and weight.

The 2nd Gen driveline is smaller relative to the size/power of the engine. But. It's a lot faster and roomier.

Both are dead nuts reliable so long as you do the basic maintenance and fix the few issues that plague the 05-09 2nd Gen.

2nd Gen. Look for 2010-2015 Pro4X if you can swing it. Rear locker, lower gears. 2nd Gen has more power.

There are some stuff you'll have to upgrade to trailer well, but we can talk you through that way enough.

1st Gen vs second Gen depends on what you're doing.

I have both a first Gen X and a second Gen Frontier. I love both for different reasons.

As mentioned, first gens are under powered. They are however extremely capable stock, have better ground clearance, stock, and are much tougher. The rear axle is indestructible,.... They are a simple, reliable vehicle that is great for overlanding right from the factory, and if something does break, are relatively easy to fix, though I'm yet to break mine.

Second Gen has way more power, can be had with a rear locker from the factory, and is a little roomier.

Depending on the weight of the trailer, I don't think you would have any issues at all overlanding with something like a small teardrop being pulled behind a first Gen. Any more, and I'd say go with a second Gen for the extra power.

Both get crap gas milage anyways.

Hope that helps. We're all happy to answer any more questions if ya got em.
