Had my 2002 Xterra since it was new (long time but only 96k, island isnʻt that big!) been used for camping, ferrying kids, and filming lava flows. Started to look long in the tooth and then power steering drained everywhere. Local mechanic fixed it and decided if I was going to keep it, it needed some upgrades, so I started searching the web and found this forum and other advice. Anyway, my name "ThatGuy" (real name is Ken) I blame on you folks as one of the first things I did was polish my yellowed headlights and switch to LED bulbs. Which led to my older kid say "Oh so youʻre THAT GUY now" and here I am.

Anyway appreciate all the learning I did here and the liberating feeling of having a 20 year old vehicle and some spray paint. Itʻs still basically stock, but I repainted all the trim, bumpers, and roof rack using bedliner and rustoleum hammer red and black paint. Added a tiny bull (calf?) bar on front to put driving lights on activated by a zombie light switch, new touch screen stereo with backup and forward cameras, added tiny 1/2" shackles to the front and back bumpers (not for pulling but cool looking kayak tie downs :D), removed sway bars, changes all the oils (engine, trans, differentials), timing belt, waterpump, upper engine gaskets, crankshaft seals etc., and then removed rear sway bar and got some 265/75 r16 MT tires to replace stock 265/70s. So thatʻs where I am right now, still tinkering and have to repaint the tailgate. Ultimate goal is to do a lot of ocean "glamping" in comfort down some pretty rough 4wd trails along wild parts of the coast.

Here is the "LavaX" named after itʻs previous forays with molten rock. Thanks for everyoneʻs help it keeping me an Xterra owner (with an assist from inflated car prices and one kid still in college as well). Anyway, cleaning and painting and upgrades have made me fall in love all over again with this X.

Thanks guys and everyone here for all the help. And the color scheme was born out of the limited palette of rustoleum hammered paint colors as they are great at hiding bad spray painting technique. Iʻd already painted everything around the house with hammered copper and bronze colors so those were out. Which left red, which had dissappeared from shelves during COVID. Weʻre also hampered here in Hawaii in that you canʻt get paint or batteries shipped to you here. Finally found 4 cans of dust covered red hammered in a mom and pop parts store here and bought them all! Or as my wife says "at least you can find it in the parking lot now, but youʻll have to quit driving like an a**h*le cause everyone in town will know who you are now". So nice to have some additional positive reaction to the colors!

Welcome to the forum!! I had a car with a unique color scheme - got pulled over and the cop was I pulled you over because we had a vehicle matching yours description involved in a robbery ( not the truth of you have long hair and we got to keep a thumb on you stoners :) ) I was like no you didn't not a chance in hell there is another El Camino with stripes like these running around lol

One time and money saving trick I learned when repainting my roof rack was that brushed on black hammered paint looks even better than spray painted. I just ran ropes through the center of the tubes and hung them from the garage door supports and brushed them down. Got two coats in an hour and done. You can watch the brush strokes disappear right after you paint. Way cheaper and easier to get a good coat than spray paint. A whole new world of possibilities has opened up for me now, wonder what a copper house roof would look like? :D

Thanks everyone! And I grew up around Denver. Hawaii is great but it doesn’t have real road trips! I spent a lot of time when younger driving around all the passes in the San Juan mountains camping and hiking in the Weminuche wilderness. Love that place and all the 4wd roads. Did a fair amount in and around canyon lands but not as rugged as watching what you guys do over there. Took my 83 toy pickup over elephant hill once and one epic trip to the dollhouse on the west est side of the river. There are so many awesome trips out there but there are a lot of cool places by the ocean here too. And come January it’s nice not to worry about snow! Lots of crunchy aa lava to drive on instead
