Hello Mr LizardKing, would you happen to remember who was driving the white X with the winch built into the rear bumper ?? It's in the Oct 14 2019 pic's . Was wondering who made it . Thanx

Really not sure. The stub shafts don't have really have any play. The pinion gear seemed ok play wise. The case is not cracked. As far as I can tell the ARB is ok. However, during diagnosing the ARB didn't want to lock. It kept pushing air. But then it did lock. IDK.

A bad break-in. A bad set of gears. Bad install (professionally installed). Something in the ARB broke and found its way in between the pinion and the ring gear. Not sure. May never actually know. I am going to replace the ring and pinion and have the ARB checked by a shop/dealer. My break-in may not have been ideal but it is hard to break-in front gears. IIRC I did a few dirt road heat up sessions followed by an easy trail day.

I would tend to believe that was a bad set of gears or bad setup. The chipping on the ring gear teeth is too symmetrical to be something bouncing around in there IMO. It looks like the loading was on the tip of the teeth and broke out the edges. Normally the breakage from something in the diff big enough to break teeth will have patches of broken teeth and will usually cause binding. This looks more like the teeth just disintegrated under load.

I'm interested in seeing the gears once they are removed and washed off to see what the wear pattern looks like on them.

Yikes!

I’m going to agree with TerryD ^ ”bad set of gears or bad setup.”

Breakage of something in the diff doing damage looks more like the gets in there, F’s it up and gets spit out rather than staying in there causing damage in relatively the same spot all the way around the “ring”.

Looks more like:

I would also be interested in seeing the “ring” after it’s out and clean….

I hope your ARB is okay. That would be a big hit….

Old injury. Just getting around to posting. I know this happened to a few other people. Others seem to be able to run 37s without an issue.
It's probably just a weak bearing cap. Chalk it up to bad luck. I'd say it let the carrier shift and caused the odd breakage pattern on the teeth.

Eh... I broke both bearing caps in my M205 when I got hung up just a little and then tried to back up and POP!

How do you break both bearing caps on a little thing hanging it up when it survives all the other dumb stuff we do with these?!

I was and still am only running 33's.
