Let's talk Knives; The overdue thread.

Had a proud sad moment today. My one daughter, 3 years old, had a toy key in her pocket today pretending it was a knife. Looks like I need to start knife shopping for her first knife soon

3 strikes me as a little young for a knife with a sharp blade but I do like the idea of starting young and teaching young folks how to safely use a knife. I constantly use knives; my 4 inch skinning blade is the ultimate simple multi-tool.

Just curious. As a general rule, when is it safe to train children to use sharp knives?

For my oldest I let him have his first “knife “ ( a wooden folder) at the age of 4.
IMHO. It all depends on the child itself.
Just because my 3 year old is showing interest doesn’t mean she will get one any time soon. Just means I need to start looking for a good one for her

I've been getting my daughters knives around 8-9. That's about the time I got my first personal knife. I had used Dad's knives before that.

My kids started using sharp knives at meal time around 5-6? Maybe earlier.... I'd have to ask the boss.

I've got to take the little one knife shopping when all this is over. I had intended her to get one around Christmas but we didn't make a family trip to Gatlinburg. Now I've got to make up for it.

I ordered a new sheath for my Benchmade 162. I never liked the original sheath and found these for $40 shipped on eBay fron a guy in NC. It's well made and fits great.

I think the recent ESEE acquisitions have really highlighted how much I disliked the sheath and how that prevented me from using this knife so I thought this was well worth the purchase price to press a good knife into service.

CRKT that looked bigger in the picture on the eBay listing. It’s nice, but I always feel a little weird using a knife doesn’t feel like it fills my palm.

Looks good! I've been thinking about trying to make a sheath for my Fiskars hatchet.
Thanks! Is the Fiskars pretty much the same as my Gerber? I like the looks of a wood handle better but this keeps a small saw inside.

Using it today. I really like how much easier it is to get in and out compared to the nylon sheath. And the belt loop isn't as wide so it swings better instead of getting hung up in the brush and jabbing me. In hindsight I should've put a fire steel loop on it too.

Gerber and Fiskars is the same company AFAIK. Great little hatchets but the factory edge is crap. I took a file and puck and put a good convex axe edge on it and it'll fly through wood now.

I bet the edge finish was the best the lawyers would allow. ;) But yeah, razor sharp now after some elbow grease. Seems a good alloy able to hold an edge pretty decent. Mine is mostly on limbing duty and it does it well.

Let me know if you want to see more build details. Got a few extra pics I could send you. Could even scan the paper template for you if you think it'll help with yours.

Thanks! I'm not quite ready to tackle something like that. I've got a bunch of projects that have piled up and need my attention more than learning a new hobby at the moment. Might hit you up this winter for tips and tricks though!

Gonna try and get a good heat treat on this 4" made of 1080 today.

Edit: my brother recommended 3 thermo cycles but I only did 2. Running low on propane. Quench went well. In the oven for tempering now. :)

2 hours later.... it's a bit darker straw than I hoped, but I'll take it. Fun fact: 3 pizzas were cooked during the tempering of this blade.

I always liked the way the benchmade 162 looks, but the handle is just to small for my hand. Not comfortable for me.

Nice looking blade. What’s planned for the scales and sheath?

I can’t like this enough. That will make beautiful scales
Thanks. Just finished cutting the blanks. Started cutting by hand, then remembered I can borrow a table saw. Facepalm moment. Much faster, easier, accurate, and less waste too! Got 23 blocks. Scrapped a few along the middle where it was cracked when the other tree fell and took it down.

There's some light checking already. Less than 24 hours since getting it home. Gonna seal up the ends and put em up to dry.

My 6 and Izula showed up today! Already used the 6 to hack some sprouts off the big maple tree in the back yard. I'm really digging that thing.

Plus I scored a MOLLE backer and pouch for $40 off the ESEE forum. Gonna strap them to my Hep panel once I get it ordered.
