This is my Mercator K55K Black Cat.

The “K55” was a knife of my youth carried daily by the guys I hung out with on the streets of Brooklyn back in the day.

In those olden times a 14-year-old street hoodlum could purchase one of these knifes from the hardware store for around $7. Imagine that shiat, a teenager able to buy a knife in a store!

This is not the exact one I carried, that one had lost its black paint. It ended up breaking or was lost and replaced with the old, crappier “007” (another cheap knife of my youth unavailable today).

Anyways, I saw them available a few years ago for around $25 and decided to get one, you know, for old times sake, relive a bit of my youth. Thin, carbon steel blade, a well-made knife. I don’t carry it often but it’s pretty nice.

Well bad luck is all I have. I went to pull out my multi tool this eve while fishing and it flew off into the water, new sheath and all. Guess my belt wasn't tight enough. I think I'm done with knives awhile. I tried heating the screws on the Esee to help remove them but screw heads are too stripped so now I just look and my new skins and wonder if they'll take them back or if I should blow even more money.. ufck!

I'm so sorry those were stripped! I honestly didn't even look at them. The knife didn't look like it had seem any use.

For striped allen screws I have had luck pressing in slightly larger torx bits and having them hold for removing the offending screws.
I always save the cheap Allen key that comes with furniture or whatever else, and in the past I’ve just taken JB Weld and permanently affixed a throwaway to the stripped bolt. Let it cure a day or whatever and then pop it right out.

I had the thought of super gluing a torx in there so I could heat it back off..but, I'm ok with the black now that I've got a home for the handles.
