Picked this up a few weeks back as a novelty, the design would make it pretty useless for most any practical application:

That same day I saw this one at a different shop, then looked it up online and ordered it directly. The size and blade are great, but could use a flipper:

Then today found this random Japanese woodworking blade:

1095 is a great user steel. If you want something to really bash on and still sharpen with ease I gotta say it's my favorite. The ESEEs are great for that.

Now, with that being said (since I know @Xterrorista or @maillet282 would call me out for my ESEE obsession) I think for a good EDC folder, S30V has to be my favorite. It still sharpens easily on an Arkansas stone and stropps up very nicely. Benchmade has a great treatment on their S30V as well. It'll still chip like most sintered metals, but it's from use.

The M390 Grip I had was SHARP. Stayed sharp a long time too. But Arkansas stone would barely polish it and it seemed to like to chip out when I tried to sharpen it.

For me, being able to sharpen without a specialty rig, anywhere I need to, is an important thing in a knife.

I need to get some more 440c blades, maybe another Grip?

I also agree with the S30V and and the 440C being very good steels for EDC folders

To sharpen.. what do yall use? I inherited a cpl stones from my grandad but usually end up using the little red plastic Rapala one that came with their cheap filet knife because it's so easy to put a quick edge on something.

If I have damage or the edge has become too convex, I break out my Lansky 5 stone sharpener. My CR2.5 came to me (second hand) with a very convexed edge I couldn't get right so it got the full work over.

For touch ups, I use a Smith's Arkansas stone then a home made strop.

But if you start getting some of the exotic steels out there, you'll want to look into some of the diamond offerings. That M390 Griptillian I had was way too hard for the Arkansas stone.

If i beat the crap out if my blade or i need to re-profile the blade i will start with my Ken Onion Work sharp machine. Then i will finish it off with my lansky that inhave upgraded up to a 6 stone. Then strop. If its quick blade maintenance its right onto the lansky and a strop

My buddy has a machine with different straps, maybe 5-6 and his edges are the sharpest I've ever felt, not sure of the mechanics or brand.

I've never used a strop but think it's something I must have.

Eh, upon lookup, cheap Chinese knockoff that'll be great for what I got it for, bait. Easy to sharpen quick to dull.
CRKT stuff is usually ok. They aren't a "premium" brand but they make nice knives with an affordable price point. The cost of affordability is usually steel quality in knives.

Looking into it a bit, it offers good corrosion resistance and like you said, easy to sharpen. Sounds like a great steel for what you intend to use it for. Back it up with a larger fixed blade for camp tasks and a hatchet or small axe to round out your kit! Maybe toss one of the diamond pocket sharpeners in your bag to touch it up if you need to but I would imagine you could probably use the edge of your car window in a pinch. The Lansky Puck is handy if you carry an axe as well.

I like ESEE because of price point and unbeatable warranty but there are many other good camp knife makers out there.

You were right but it wasn't the onion. View attachment 19747
Be careful with that thing. Never use the green belt to sharpen a blade ( too coarse and will make the blade disappear). As well you should practice on dollar store blades that you don't give a shiat about before attempting to use on one of your favourite blades. That thing can round off a tip faster than jim looking up tentacles

Agreed with all of the abbove. Another option is the worksharp field sharpener.

I have one of those worksharps. Works really good for kitchen knifes, for touch ups..

another trick if yea do not have a Porcelain rod, for fine touch ups.. Roll your Window down on the X, and finish up the blade on the glass edge.. For its a Extra fine grit. Or use your buddy's bottom of coffee mug.
A sharp knife is a safe knife!. ;-)
