Long story short, I drive a Tacoma now. Bought it relatively cheap at a relatively reputable used car dealership. It's a 2006 SR5. Access cab, 6ft bed, V6, 4x4. Completely stock, very very clean inside and out. Pretty sure it's a one owner truck, I grabbed it with like, 127,xxx on the clock.

The previous owner, for some reason, didn't follow through with the frame recall. The frame has been repaired, and the repair is sound, but I know that at some point in the future, the problem will rear its ugly head and I'll have to make a decision. Before that happens though, I'm just gonna drive it, and maintain it as best as I can, and enjoy it. Since the future is uncertain, I won't dump money into it. My driving history tells me that I'll put between 10,000 and 14,000 miles per year on it.

I'm somewhat active on a Tacoma forum, but to be honest, I just can't engage over there. I mostly use it to read and learn, but that's about where my involvement ends, generally. Now that I'm back here, I figure I'll start a thread...even if all I do is use it as a maintenance log.

So, here it is, in all its "old man truck" glory. These are the pics I took at the dealership the day I test drove it. "It"...hell, it doesn't even have a name yet.

The tires it came with got me through vehicle inspection and just barely got me through winter, but I don't think they'll pass inspection in May. They also suck. Firestone Destination LE. Decent highway tire, especially if the highway is perfectly clean and dry. I know the back end of this truck is lightweight, especially with the plastic bed; but I've broken these tires loose so many times, even while driving like an old man.

To remedy the situation, I've got a full set of 5 pizza cutters in the garage, which I'll have mounted in a few weeks. Stock size is 245/75/16, I'm going 235/85/16. From what I've read, this is as tall as you can go on stock suspension...and only because of the reduced width. Sumitomo Encounter A/T. Very affordable at just under $160/ea, very good reviews on things like on/off road performance, snow performance, treadwear etc., and an aggressive look without being overly aggressive. After all, it's a daily, not a wheeler. Also, at 17/32", these have the deepest tread of any tire I was considering. They're load range E, so I know the ride will be a bit more rough, but that's ok. I ran E's on my X and didn't mind the change.

About the only other things I've done are to build a 3 kayak rack for the bed, machine an adapter to use a MT bike grip as a shift knob, and a nice free mod to allow me to run the factory fog lights solo. From the factory, you can only run the fogs with the headlights on, and they turn off when you turn on the high beams. This lets me run the fogs whenever I want - solo, parking lights, headlights, high beams.

Other small (free) things I've done are:

- Permanently install a hose to the oil filter catch pan thing whatever TF it's called. Did you know these originally came with a kit, a rubber hose that you push onto the nipple of the little catch pan under the oil filter, to carry the oil to the drain pan? I didn't, and I don't have the kit. First time I changed oil, the oil from the filter ran through the nipple and dripped all over the skid plate and serpentine belt. Dumb design. I ran a length of fuel line from the nipple and routed it down through a hole in the skid plate.

- Added an extension hose from the HVAC drain so the water drips onto the ground instead of the frame rail...another dumb design.

- Plugged two of the 3 bed drain holes, and relocated them so they drain onto the ground. The factory center drain hole dripped water directly onto the driveshaft (wtf) and the factory passenger hole dripped directly onto the leaf spring perch (again wtf). Now they both go the ground instead.

In the future, I may add a leveling kit to the front, just very small. Cheapest way is coilover spacers, $20-$100 depending on brand and material. I won't do more than 1", just something to even it out a little.

I've got a lot of stone chips on the hood, no rust but don't want it to start, so I'll probably paint it...along with the fender flares and fuel door, just because. Probably black, probably rattlecan bed liner. I'd like new wheels, because these factory steelies are ugly and a little rusty; but I can't afford that right now. There's also not much to choose from that I do like, so maybe I'll paint them, too.

New tires and wheels! I'll have to get some better pics, but these will do for now.

Wheels are OEM-style steel spares. I wanted a matching set of 5 wheels so I can do 5 tire rotations to keep the spare tire wearing to about the same diameter as the other 4, since these tires aren't the same size as OE.

After getting the tires mounted but before I mounted them on the truck, I coated the wheels front and back with Fluid Film, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then wiped it around with a FF-soaked cloth. I plan to do this every time I rotate tires.

Fit check:

Tires are Sumitomo Encounter AT, size 235/85R16, taller and skinnier than the OE 245/75R16's. 17/32" tread depth, 3 peaks M+S rating, 10 ply, more affordable than comparable AT's in the OE size and load spec. So far I love them, but winter will be the real test and I've got a long time to wait for that. I have taken them down some (very) wet and (very) muddy farm roads, 2wd was all I needed. I was expecting the 10 ply to give me a stiffer ride on pavement, especially with an empty bed and no additional weight from mods; but the ride is much softer, smoother.

Trimmed my mudflaps by 6-7" front and rear. It's absurd how long the fronts were...I had maybe 2-3" of clearance to the road?

1000006496.jpg

Made some grab handles to help when climbing onto the tailgate (one on each side).

1000006497.jpg

Installed a marine 12v plug for my air compressor or roadside work light.

1000006494.jpg

Made a bracket to mount said work light under the hood (the cord lives in one of the door pockets).

'Twas a productive weekend.
