Update on some mods...

A couple weeks ago, finally installed my CB Radio & 3' NGP Firestik upload_2019-7-31_1-28-15.gif But not getting below 1.5 on the SWR on Ch. 19, ~2 on 1 & 40. The power output is reading around 2.5 watts on 19, 3.5/7 on 1, & <2 on 40 upload_2019-7-31_1-28-15.gif I have the CB spliced into the constant power outlet on the dash, but I may run it directly to the battery via a distribution block. Anywayz, supposedly getting about 1.5-2 miles transmission distance...not the greatest, but good enough for offroading right now.

& the big news for my X is she's gettin' some NXRocks skids! Ordered the engine & T-case skid last week :headbang: Fingers-crossed they'll be delivered in time for a run in Sept!! Remy's awesome! what else can I say?! upload_2019-7-31_1-28-15.gifccasion5: Pics will follow once I get them on!

& they're getting painted red too! My wife told me "It's gonna be the Hogan mobile", & I laughed & said "You got that right Brotha'!"

next on the list....tires!

(actually next on the list is getting a part-time job to pay for the tires & other mods upload_2019-7-31_1-28-56.gif)

well, been quite a while since I've updated my build thread....haven't really done any mods to her over the years other than selling off my skid plates

but....happy to report...I finally got new shoes for her the other week & just stealthed the rims as icing on that cake too :headbang:

Picked up 5 General Grabber AT2's for $900 at discount tire...including their lifetime tire replacement plan on all 5. Got them to shave off about $100 by matching another tire place that had a cheaper installation fee (brought it down to ), and he hooked me up w/ their replacement plan for all 5, but at the cost for 3 tires. AND, by putting it on their discount tire card, I got a $30 VISA card too.

& stealthed the rims too....been wanting to do this for a long time, but was waiting for the new tires first.

Loving how she looks now!

well, ordered a new leafpack/rear shock for her tonight. Rear end has been sagging like crazy when my 5x8 enclosed trailer is connected, or if my hitch rack gets loaded up. Ran measurements, and turns out that stock leaves & AAL are shot even when under no load....i'm now at about 1/2" lift on Driver Rear & 3/4" lift on Pass. Rear upload_2019-7-31_1-31-2.gif So much for that 2" lift via the 2-leaf AAL...at least it had a good run of about 5 years & 50K miles.

Getting an OME Dakar leaf pack (Not HD pack) and OME rear shocks to match (along w/ new Ubolts & shims). It'll give me a 1.5" lift at least.

Front is still lifted courtesy the 2" spacer....have about a 1.75" lift in the front. So with the OME leafpack, I should get about a 1" rake going at least.

I plan on replacing the front suspension with OME several months from now when I can save up the $$ for it so that I can run a full OME suspension. When I do that, I'm probably gonna run a PRG 0.5" spacer in front & an adjustable shackle in the rear to get a 2" lift across-the-board.

Time to start PB Blasting the rear & hope for a warm-ish weekend in the next month or so!

I decided a couple month ago that I had enough of my rear suspension (stock + dual-AAL) sagging about 1-1.5" under load (empty 5x8 enclosed trailer, loaded-up hitch rack, etc...), so last month I pulled the plug & ordered an entire OME setup for the rear (Dakar LT/MD springs & their Nitrocharger rear shocks).

i.php

Overall, I retained the same amount of lift I had in the rear with the worn OME suspension/AAL, but it only sags 1/4" with my trailer at least! Rake is still even from Front-to-back, so at some point I'll be getting some shackles in the rear to give it another 1" or so lift back there.

Ride-wise...it seems pretty smooth. Never really had any jarring issues with the stock/AAL setup, but I do know that it's definitely not any stiffer at least.

At some point, I'd like to match the front suspension with OME too, but that'll be a while off.

& today....thanks to @Killswitch....I've got skids back under her belly once again! Hefty skids too! Feels good to have protection under her again.....NOW I'm ready to go wheeling once again upload_2019-7-31_1-31-39.gif (I had given up wheeling when I sold my first set of skids as I want protection to my drivetrain when hitting the trails).

Driving them home...

Well, I learned the hard way earlier this week that you can't cut even a 1/4" off the end of a NGP coax cable to put on a new connector. That, and firestik doesn't advise crimping a connector on either.

Double whammy

*facepalm*

When I had taken my antenna off my roof rail to install my no-weld roof rack last summer, the connector snapped off right where I soldered it. Being I had no use for the antenna at that time, I had left it of til I needed it for this weekend.

So I cut about an inch off the coax to strip it back, and put on a new connector...by crimping it on nonetheless. Went to tune it, and SWR was sky high....3.5, 4 maybe. Halfway into the red zone on my meter.

Googled it and that's when I learned that little tidbit of info.

So ordered a whole new NGP kit that night and got it installed this afternoon for a wheeling excursion tomorrow morning. Tuned it to 1.7 or something on both ch. 1 and 40

woo-hoo!!!

Currently, in the process of ordering a 2015 Pro-4X rear axle (3.36, 22k miles)!!! Just waiting to hear back from the yard with pics of it to confirm ABS sensors, locker connection & harness, & stamp on ring gear to confirm gear ratio.

and will be getting a matching r180 from Killswitch on the cheap too....and decided to go all or nothing, so I WILL be putting a LOKKA in it as well upload_2019-7-31_1-36-23.gif

Rear diff cover will be getting ordered from 4x4parts as well!

may as well get the flush-mount LED's for the rear too

oh...& throw in some OTRATTW switches for the locker, rear LEDs, & my FD strobe.

at some point, gonna black-out my hood w/ plastidip too to see how it looks (hopefully it'll work well too)

Finally...she's getting built how I've been wanting her to be!!

Under the cover of night, ran wiring the other night in preparation for the BlueSea Fuse box. It's got a 50amp circuit breaker off the battery as I won't be running a large current through it for a while (seen next to the black fuse box on left)
IMG_20160419_093326224-me.jpg

IMG_20160419_093333305-me.jpg

after going thru the firewall, I left it coiled up in driverside kick panel for when I was going to install the fuse box......

......which ended up being last night
IMG_20160419_093406227-me.jpg

I ended up making the fuse block have a switched power section...the red line on the cover shows the split. Top four fuses are switched power...bottom six are constant power. 80amp relay is coming in today so that I can get that working next. I'll be running cable from + of fuse block to relay....then from relay to one of the switched fuses to power the other three.
IMG_20160419_093443873-me.jpg

And the OTRATTW switches came in yesterday too View attachment 9630

Installed...but not in the dash yet.

Dash'll remain pulled apart now through next weekend when I do the axle/front diff swap. Will be pulling wire for the locker & rear backup lights, so dont' wanna bother pulling it all apart a second time for that

IMG_20160422_085507753_HDR-sm.jpg

starting to work on a cheap DIY alternative to the Xoskel cage...figured it'd be easier to work on it with the rack on the ground, then with it on and hopping up/down/around the X. Hoping it'll work out as planned out in my head!

Just finished buttoning up the dash from all the wiring & switch installs. Some pics of the wiring I ran....pics are ordered going from Drivers side ---> passenger side. I'll upload my wiring diagram later on at some point. Diagrams that others have posted of their setup helped me with this wiring job, so figured I'd share in the favor upload_2019-7-31_1-49-42.gif

Two switches are going in on the left....one for the rear LEDs (on/off/on) & one to turn on/off the inline aux-in I added for the stock radio. Where the red cables are dangling on the right....2 relays for the roof lights
i.php

IMG_20160427_133709628_HDR-me.jpg

looking in from right side of passenger glove box.
- Coming in from left on bottom of fuse block is red power cable from the battery (12v constant). Coming straight down from the fuse block is 12v constant going to an 80amp relay (bottom red power cable running out of frame on right side)
- Coming in from right side, top red power cable, is 12v switched power running to top 4 fuses of fuse block (remember I mod'd the fuseblock so top 4 fuses are switched power). Only top 4 fuses get power when ignition is turned on.
IMG_20160419_093443873-me.jpg

Blue Sea fuse box is on left side, out of frame....bottom power cable is 12v constant coming from the BlueSea Fuse box, top power cable is 12v switched coming from 80amp relay.
IMG_20160427_152623317-me.jpg

Looking UP from underneath passenger glove box, you see the 80 amp relay. It's triggered by the switched power outlet in the dash.
(pass. seat would be at top of pic, front of truck at bottom).
IMG_20160427_155802322-me.jpg

Finished job with switches
(driver side by side mirror controls not done yet...waiting on a switch to come in)

We rolled the stock axle back underneath, put the leadsprings up with my 'new' PRG shackles, and put the wheels on the axle. Figured if it's gonna sit there for a while, may as well make it look good with those sexy shackles ;-)

Picked up the waterproof connection from Amazon. Only had 4 wires coming up, so ordered the PG11 sized connections. 5 came in the package & put 3 of the 5 to use (the other two are being used as any possible future wiring to the basket)

o I gotta fist give props to @XJ-TERRA for his how-to (granted he hasn't logged in here in about 8 months tho upload_2019-7-31_1-56-6.gif ). I more/less followed all of it for my entire electrical/wiring project...from the battery, to the fuse box, to the lights

Picked up 4 grommets from Lowes to run the wires for the roof lights through
20190804022227-sm.jpg

Brought the wires that came through the roof & the wires for the lights into passenger side of the roof basket. Bought an 8 terminal bus on Amazon to connect them together, and a plastic ABS box to house it in. Thru-the-roof wires are on the bottom of the bus, lights are on top. There's a black top that goes over the opening to seal it all up. I"ll be ziptying the box to the side of the roof basket.
IMG_20160509_085721986-sm.jpg

IMG_20160509_085758777_HDR-sm.jpg

The box & connectors are just to keep it all tidy looking...not really for waterproofness (being it's inside the rack, it won't be getting exposed to rain anyways). Siliconed the bus to the plastic box, and the connectors to the sides of the box. Measuring from the inside of the box, the height of the sides is about 1/16 shorter than the width of the nut, which caused a gap between the top & the box itself when I put the top on. So, ditched the nuts & just siliconed the connectors to the box.

2 lights per positive/negative cables (as I've got 2 relays under the steering wheel for the 4 lights).

Good news tho....found a pair of rear shafts thru @RANGERSTRANGE! And I'll be getting them either Monday or Tuesday thanks again dude! Will be putting the shafts into the axle shortly thereafter, but will be holding off for a couple weeks before I attempt the swap again. Need a break from all the work I've been doing to the X.

painting tip: apparently if you spray primer onto "cool" metal (been sitting outside these past couple wet/dreary days), it cracks when it dries and creates badass looking scars on a metal skull! (Fyi that the nose will be getting painted yellow)
(Pay no attention to the sloppy bed liner around the edges...will be getting fixed. Damn painters tape let it bleed thru)

the swap's still not complete tho. ugh. I started around 11...by 8pm, I was just finishing up (just had to reattach the brake caliper & then all that would've been needed was to put wheels back on) when a big @ss storm was starting to rip through. Got everything picked up & put in the X just as soon as the flood gates opened up from above.

Part of why it took so long was i was watching my kids too while wife was at work, so had to tend to them occasionally. Also had to do a trip to Autozone for a deep socket 32mm & also grab lunch stuff for kiddos.

Also spent time re-jackstanding my truck so I could deal w/ the LCA/spindle/knuckle.

Also learned that the rear lug bolts are NOT THE SAME as the ones for the front. WTF??!!! I've got like 17 spare lug bolts due to my axle fiasco....need to replace 3 for the front...and after pulling 3 off the spare axle shafts I have, learned that they're SMALLER than the front ones! AAARRGGHHH!!!

And then dealing w/ the driveshaft bolts as I had nothing to hold the driveshaft still (I had pulled CV axles by that point), and was by myself. ended up rigging a way to keep a prybar locked into the u-joint while I pushed on the wrench w/my foot from the passenger side.

and also had to deal w/ damn sporadic rainstorms too

I'm so sick of this month...nothing but rain rain rain. Today's forecase was SUNNY too....yet.....it rained.

Front diff is now 100% swapped out with the LOKKA'd 3.36 diff! Gear oil and all ;-)

Got the entire rear pulled apart....literally just need to move stock axle out from underneath, and get the new one in there. Then button it all up! Dunno if that'll be tomorrow or Wed.

Finally....close to the end with this swap project!

Purchased adjustable Bil 5100's with a 1/2" spacer set to 1.5" w/ the 1/2" spacer, & said it gave 2" lift...so I'll either stay the same height, or get a small lift if my stock suspension/2" spacer is sagging.

well, today was a long @ss day. Much, much longer than planned. Long story short....summarized & bits/pieces cut out

Plan was to pull my stock springs & UCA's, & put in the new 'used' Bilsteins & UCA's I got last week. simple swap, right? it would've been....if the Bils with 1/2" spacer weren't about 1.5" shorter than the stock coilovers with 2" spacer.

That would've meant about 1-1.5" less droop than what I currently have. And those snazzy SPCs I got... wouldn't be needed as there wouldn't have been any CBC. I paid good $$$ for those, and I wanted to get the benefit of them...no CBC at a full droop. A LONGER droop in this case!

So, I decided to dissemble the coilover, reduce it's preload to the 2nd notch (which I believe is 0.5" lift), and put my old 2" spacers on. The 5100 was at the 4th notch IIRC (1.5"). That was fun...borrowing a spring compressor from Autozone & using it for the first time ever

Got them installed, & did the necessary grinding to the coil buckets to prevent the boots from tearing

All-in-all, it appears that I gained about 1.5" droop from my previous setup. And gained about an extra 1" lift in the front....i'm now leveled out yet again! LOL I may adjust my rears up 1" to get the rake back, but I gotta see if my brake lines would play nice w/ that. I've already got the DIY brake extender on there...and I"m on the lowest shackle setting (OME leafs already give me 1.5" lift).

Gonna take her to get an alignment either Wed or Thurs.

Then found & fixed a problem w/ my pass side CV axle leaking at the seal. I

so I pulled the CV out entirely and cleaned off the surface of the metal surface that is supposed to get pressed up against the seal (used a dremel with a soft wire brush too to clean it smooth). Put it all back together, drain & refilled the front diff. All fixed

Finally got Minion in for her alignment today after swapping the front suspension on Sunday.

Last time I had an alignment done was back in 2010! After 6 years, I'd say she held that alignment pretty good up to today! Surprised the suspension swap didn't throw too much outta whack. But guess I shouldn't be...it's about the same amount of I had back in 2010 upload_2019-7-31_2-6-15.gif And the tech used the SPC UCA to adjust the camber on driver's side...I told him the cam bolts were seized.

FINALLY!!! The day I've been waiting for....got notice that my sliders have finally shipped!!! WOOO-HOOOOO!!!!

March 28 -> July 7......just a little longer than 6-8 weeks, ya think?! :-\

if only the d*mn powdercoaters didn't get backed up, I'm certain I would've had them at least two weeks ago & could've avoided this:
