Well the 4th is coming upon us and nothing makes me feel more patriotic... I've spent the last two 4th's deployed.

This year I've decided to fly my flag upside down.... not for disrespect... but for awareness. I.. we.. the country is in distress.

So... as an active duty sailor I'll be flying it upside down in base housing until they tell me to take it down. Not trying to cause problems.. I find the act patriotic. If any of you feel inclined to join... please do. It's not illegal.

I wear upside down flags on the bike, my jacket, and even sport one on the the Xterra... the gate guards enjoy it.

Oh and if you ask if I'm in distress.... yes... i'm in distress and i'm willing to bet you are too... no matter what it is.. civil, political, or military...

Call it what you want.. delete the thread if you want.. just thought I'd ask for some support from one service member to the rest of the you. That is all.. or you can delete it since that's the easy way out

I'm with ya on this one. If I had my flag replaced then I would but I'll be flying my Marine Corps Colors since the corps is trying pulled the head out the ass per say.

I think this Rise Against song says it all... I don't have the same experiences but I feel the same way...

I don't blame the corps for the issues I have. It's this county that sent us over there for who knows why when we have so many issues here at that we are fighting for else where. Doesn't make sense...

Couldn't have said it better myself... I love the Navy... I hate what we do. I'm sick of bullying the rest of the world. Nothing makes sense... so I'm making a statement...

Only question I have is am I breaking any articles? I don't want UCMJ

After a bit of googling I think I'm justified... the country is in an instance of extreme danger. Prepare for a bumpy ride...

I know some of you fly flags on your Xterras... its almost the 4th... I dare you to fly it upside down. Send a message... something isn't right about what's going on and I bet you'll get more support than you think. I'm doing it in a damn military town... quit standing down and think for yourself.

... and that could be the ban hammer I hear...

I highly respect your decision to do this. I don't think you should be banned your not bantering anyone with the opposite position of you. As I don't fly a flag ever. I will not participate in these activities. If I normally did I would highly consider it.

As long as things don't get out of hand there's no reason we would ban anyone... I'm not sure why the topic was even brought up this is NOT the newx

Steeze, I respect your decision to display the flag inverted as a distress signal. The freedom to make that statement is part of why you joined the Navy in the first place, and I will always stand in line to thank you for that. I do feel the nation is indeed enduring a time of distress, but I also feel that US Code Chapter 4 Title 8, leaves "distress" slightly open to interpretation. I interpret it to mean an immediate danger to persons that can be solved by quick direct action, such as extinguishing a fire. The actions required to resolve this nation's problems, if such a thing is possible, will be neither quick nor direct. As such, I will choose to display my flag proudly, not as a distress signal, but as a symbol of the many great things this nation has been and still can be if we work towards that greatness. Do we have problems? Yes. Can they be fixed in a day? No. But they can be fixed. It will start with education. Not public education, but the sort that starts at home. I see it happening already in my state, a movement amongst the youth, to rid our state legislature of politicians who think the answer to everything is needless spending of our tax dollars. It is already beginning. Hopefully it is an idea that will spread further, an idea that things can be right, but that the only way it will happen is if we do it through the tools our nation's fathers gave us, namely the rights to vote, to speak out, to write freely.

Why don't we have a political section where the new posts in it are not displayed on the new posts sections. Like put a password on it so that only those who want to view it can. Just a suggestion Dave.

Also I don't think anyone should feel in danger of being banned from this thread. Unless they are disregarding a direct request from an admin or something. If it is a confusion with the rules of the forum or something they should be clarified and a warning be issued but I'm not sensing a ban hammer.

This has been brought up In the past and I will always say no.. It sounds like a good idea but it would bleed over into non restricted areas..

If you would like to talk political or what ever I'm sure there are lots of spots on fb for that ;)

Now back to upside down boobies or what ever this is about.

Carry on

it ruins it for everyone when someones gotta get political
and now we find out which side of the specturm people we might like regarding Xterras now fall and it colors our perceptions for all subsequent post.

This was one of the undoings of the xterraownersclub.com

Look, I respect this site and the people here way too much to say what I think. I will say as a PROUD veteran and father of 2 sons in the army I am incredibly offended by this and that is all I will say.

I suggested this to Dave a long time ago... obviously he wasn't into it. I don't think he even responded

As a disabled veteran with 2 daughters.. I'm glad you're offended. You should be...

When the VA / Navy makes your life a living hell... you might get it. Take offense if you want... a lot of people are narrow minded. Freedom of speech and I fought for it. I'm displaying it proud.. just for you.

His silence and non-action was your response.

I understand what you are trying to say here, and I agree with it. However, your attempt to poke the bear here is just not happening. I would heed the advice that others give (Might not be Steeze style) and voice your opinions, but as a part of this community you must respect the rules.

And the show continues.

I understand being annoyed with the current government, but disrespecting the flag and country is NOT a way to express your feelings.

It's not disrespecting the flag.. it's a symbol of distress.. I'm not burning or trashing it.. I'm not breaking rules or breaking the law. I'm protesting peacefully.

Have I broken any rules?

So I'm sure what I'm going to say is going to piss someone off but I have to add some fuel to fire.
Flying the flag upside-down isn't disrespectful it is a sign of distress. Not necessarily the country more or less the installation it is being flown at. A good reference for this is the movie The Last Castle. Long story short the prison was all screwed up and a higher up was coming so they wanted to raised awareness of the issues.

But as to the disrespectful things that can be done to the flag and most don't know it. Like flying it at night unlit, flying it in bad weather with it not being an all weather flag, or flying it in the wrong order or placement. Also it is to be dry cleaned not washed. Nothing about it flying upside-down.

Thanks man! That means a lot.. it takes courage to do what I'm doing and it took courage to say what you said. HOOAAHH!

One of my favorite quotes from Maya Angelou...

Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can't practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage.

Never mentioned anything before about being disabled. I'll fly my flag like this.

Diggin it Thanks! That poor X was surely in distress... One time someone asked me if it caught on fire! Favorite compliment ever!
