Hood Snorkel

Thinking of making a hood snorkel out of this thing I found on Ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/M35A2-2-5-TON-NEW-AIR-CLEANER-CAP-MUSHROOM-5-TON-M800-/200537064618

Kind of have an idea of how I want to do it, but if anyone has suggestions I'm open! I know it won't be very high up and is in the "splash zone" but I don't cross water very often. This will be more of a just-in-case-mod and would cross the water slowly to avoid splashes.

I like the low profile look, think it should be fairly simple, and it should give me the same intake improvement of a normal snorkel.

Again, feel free to share any concerns or ideas!

So you're wanting to route the tubing to where it sits like in the wiper cowl?
I think it would interfere with opening up the hood. Depending on how tall you made it

Sorry forgot to mention I will not be putting in it in the wiper cowl like in the pictures. As you guys said it would probably hit the hood when opened.

I'll be putting the snorkel head on the driver side of the hood itself because of where our intake is.

Got the idea from BleepinJeep actually. Here's his finished product before painting it black:

Unless you have a body lift, I don't think you'll have the clearance to run that duct work under the hood. And at that point, why not do what the XJ guys do and simply cut through the firewall into the cowl and put the hose there. Effectively raising your intake to the cowl.

Currently I don't have a BL. I've thought about that being an issue though and I guess there's only one way to find out! As for running it through the firewall and up the cowl, I fear that it might get in the way of the hood opening?

Do you have a problem with the snorkels that are pre-made? Just curious as to why you want to go this route.

Not at all, they're just expensive lol.

Whatever I decide to do it'll be a DIY snorkel. Whether that's the classic snorkel look, this, or something else I haven't decided. I stubbled across this idea recently and liked the look so I wanted to hear some opinions.

Pretty sure I didn't even spend $100 on mine. Snorkel head from eBay was less than $50. $45 ish? Bought 12' of PVC pipe at the local hardware store for like $7 (they only sell 12' lengths), and a handful of elbows (most of which I didn't even need, but wanted to make sure I had enough incase I hadn't thought it all through) for I dunno, $12? Add the cost of a 2 radiator clamps (had them on-hand already, but maybe $4) and some brackets and hardware to secure the PVC to the inner fender (also had them on hand, maybe $4).

Just depends how nice you want to do it I suppose! Using PVC is the one of the cheaper routes and proper intake tubing would be the more expensive. If I figure it out I'll be sure to post the details here and on my build thread.

Exactly, haha. I'm all about the DIY method personally.

I'm excited to see what you come up with.
